A's SP Kendall Graveman improves FB location after demotion
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:40 pm ET) Athletics starting pitcher Kendall Graveman is returning to the major-league rotation Saturday against the Rays to fill in for the injured Drew Pomeranz, who is on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury.

Graveman struggled in his first stint in the rotation before being demoted to the minors, but he said his time at Triple-A Nashville helped him with his fastball location, per InsideBayArea.com. He added he was able to increase the miles per hour between his fastball and changeup.

The right-hander went 2-1 with a 1.85 ERA in four starts for Nashville. He had 14 strikeouts and nine walks in 24 1/3 innings.

Pirates SP Charlie Morton set to return to mound on Monday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:39 pm ET) Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton has been named the starter for Monday against Miami, MLB.com has reported

Morton has been sidelined since last September and has been rehabbing from labrum surgery.

He was tearing it up at Triple-A Indianapolis to the tune of a 2-1 record and 1.33 ERA. He walked just six and fanned 22 in 20 1/3 innings.

Nationals' Matt Williams: Tanner Roark will start Monday or Tuesday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4:36 pm ET) Nationals relief pitcher Tanner Roark faced live hitters prior to Friday's game against the Phillies at Nationals Park. Roark, who has not pitched in five days, appears on track to start Monday or Tuesday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, manager Matt Williams said, per MASN Sports. He's expected to go 70 pitches, Williams added.

Roark owns a 2.66 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP with a 7:5 K:BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings.

Struggling Marlins first baseman Michael Morse sits again Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:31 pm ET) For the second straight game, Marlins first baseman Michael Morse will be out of the starting lineup. Morse will be on the bench for Friday's game against the Orioles, while Justin Bour gets another start at first.

Morse's struggles this season have been well-documented, and they will earn him another night on the bench for the Marlins.

Ausmus: Tigers DH Victor Martinez began rehab Friday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:30 pm ET) Brad Ausmus has announced that Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez began his rehab Friday in Orlando, per the Detroit Free Press.

Martinez was placed in the disabled list with a lingering knee ailment that prevented him from hitting against right-handers to his usual standards.

Ausmus has stated that he has no clear idea as to when Martinez will return to the team.

Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka to pitch at Triple-A again Wednesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:27 pm ET) Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (forearm) will make his next rehab start Wednesday against Triple-A Pawtucket. He is scheduled to throw 65 pitches.

Tanaka made his first rehab start Thursday. He threw 41 pitches, including 25 strikeouts. His fastball sat in the low 90s, according to The Star-Ledger.

Marlins LF Christian Yelich gets a breather on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:26 pm ET) Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich is being held out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles. No injury is being reported, so it appears to just be a day off.

Yelich had started every game since returning from a stint on the disabled list on May 8, and he's been struggling offensively. In those 12 games, he's batting just .159 (7 for 44) with a home run and a double.

Ichiro Suzuki will make the start in left field and bat seventh in the order.

Rangers bring up Jake Smolinski from minors
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:19 pm ET) The Rangers have promoted first baseman Jake Smolinski to replace the shelved Kyle Blanks, who has been placed on the disabled list.

Smolinski struggled in his first stint in the majors this season, batting just .140 (7-for-50) after showing tremendous promise in 2014.

Tigers' Justin Verlander scheduled for Tuesday simulated game
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4:17 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander completed a bullpen session on Friday, and is scheduled for a simulated game Tuesday in Oakland, reports MLB.com.

Verlander has been sidelined all season because of a triceps injury. He is scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment at some point after the simulated game.

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there," manager Brad Ausmus said, per the Detroit Free Press.

Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval (knee) can't start on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(4:16 pm ET) Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval remains out of the starting lineup for Friday's contest against the Angels. Sandoval has been sidelined since getting hit by a pitch in his knee on Tuesday. There was thought that Sandoval would be able to play on Friday, as he was used as a pinch-hitter on Thursday.

Sandoval was seen taking ground balls at third base earlier on Friday, but he says his knee is still too sore to make a strong throw from third base. He will be available for pinch-hitting duties, however, according to the Boston Globe.

Brock Holt will once again make the start at third and bat seventh for manager John Farrell.
