Josh Rutledge out of lineup Wednesday, available in emergency
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:47 pm ET) Rockies shortstop Josh Rutledge is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Cubs, but he is available in an emergency situation, MLB.com reports.

Rutledge missed Monday and Tuesday due to an illness, and it seems like he's getting better, as the team optioned a reserve infielder Wednesday. He has hit .307/.358/.486 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 140 at-bats.

Drew Stubbs returns to lineup Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:44 pm ET) Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs is back in the lineup Wednesday and batting fifth in his team's game against the Cubs.

Stubbs hadn't played since Saturday due to an ankle injury, but he came into the team's marathon game Tuesday and went 0 for 1 with a walk. He has hit .300/.340/.514 with 11 home runs, 29 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 243 at-bats.

Robbie Grossman goes deep in first to help bury Oakland
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:36 pm ET) Robbie Grossman has just two hits in his last 17 at-bats for the Astros, but the second of those hits was a doozy. It traveled over the fence in the first inning to complete a blitz that gave his team a 6-0 lead.

Grossman also walked twice in the rout to improve his on-base percentage to .313, which is strong when considering he owns a .195 batting average. He has 29 walks in 170 at-bats this season.

Jon Singleton shines light in midst of darkness with home run
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:30 pm ET) Astros first baseman Jon Singleton has still not achieved a multi-hit game since July 8, but he certainly made the most of his one hit in a Wednesday rout of Oakland. It left the yard for his eighth homer of the season.

The two-run blast in the fifth inning was merely the cherry on top of an 8-1 victory. Singleton has just five hits in his last 44 at-bats.

C.J. Wilson completes 'good' bullpen session, set to return
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:24 pm ET) Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson completed a "good" bullpen session Wednesday and he is ready to return to the rotation, the Orange County Register reports.

Wilson will likely be activated from the disabled list Saturday to start against the Rays. He has been out since July 9 while recovering from an ankle injury, though he did strike out seven while giving up two runs in 5 1/3 innings in Monday's rehab start.

Struggles continue Wednesday for Jason Hammel
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:20 pm ET) Jason Hammel has been a mess on the mound since joining the Athletics. That mess got worse Wednesday in Houston.

Hammel was bombed for six runs in the first inning and yielded eight in 4 1/3 to lower his record to 0-4 with Oakland. He surrendered seven hits, including home runs to Jon Singleton and Robbie Grossman, while walking three and fanning four.

The right-hander, who has allowed 16 runs and five taters in 16 innings since the deal, will attempt to turn it around Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Brett Lawrie might begin rehab assignment this weekend
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:15 pm ET) Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said third baseman Brett Lawrie (finger) is making great progress and could be ready to start a rehab assignment this weekend, according to Sportsnet.ca.

Dallas Keuchel stays hot in shutting down Athletics
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:11 pm ET) Astros ace Dallas Keuchel continued to rebound from a miserable slump with his second straight strong outing Wednesday against Oakland.

Kuechel, who blanked Miami for seven innings last week, yielded just one run in pitching his first complete game since May 25. He gave up five hits, walked three and fanned five. His lone mistake was sent over the fence by Josh Donaldson in the second inning.

He will attempt to maintain his momentum Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Paul Goldschmidt gets Diamondbacks rolling with homer
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:02 pm ET) Diamondbacks prolific first baseman Paul Goldschmidt wiped out a scoreless tie in the sixth inning Wednesday in Cincinnati with a two-run homer that put his team ahead to stay.

Despite his first homer since July 19, Goldschmidt is scuffling a bit. He has just seven hits in his last 39 at-bats as his stat line has been weakened to a still-fine .301/.396/.545.

Rockies not likely trading SPs, but listening to offers on RPs
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:58 pm ET) The Rockies are not expected to trade starting pitchers Jorge De La Rosa and Brett Anderson by Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, sources told The Denver Post. They are not expected to trade any relievers either, including closer LaTroy Hawkins, but they will continue to listen to offers.
