Andrew Susac among Giants' spring cuts Sunday

(1:04 pm ET) The Giants optioned catcher Andrew Susac, first baseman Adam Duvall, pitcher Hunter Strickland and outfielders Gary Brown and Juan Perez to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday.

Susac was the favorite to open the season as the team's No. 2 catcher behind Buster Posey, but Hector Sanchez won the competition, leaving Susac to open the season as the team's starter in Triple-A.

The Giants also reassigned catcher Guillermo Quiroz, second baseman Brandon Hicks and pitchers Brett Bochy, Steven Okert and Juan Gutierrez to minor-league camp.


Royals' Joe Blanton unsure if he'll opt out of deal

(12:55 pm ET) Royals pitcher Joe Blanton is unsure of whether he'll opt out of his minor-league deal with the team or not, the Kansas City Star reports.

"We’ll see when that comes," Blanton said. "I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it yet, to be honest with you."

Blanton can opt out of his deal on April 1 or on May 15 if he's not on the major-league roster. He has allowed three earned runs in 9 2/3 innings this spring.


Orioles' J.J. Hardy's shoulder doing much better

(12:49 pm ET) Orioles infielder J.J. Hardy is doing much better, following his collision on Friday. 

Hardy injured his left shoulder in the incident and is sitting out the weekend's games. On Sunday, manager Buck Showalter said that the shoulder is "much better", per MASN's Roch Kubatko.


Padres' Cory Luebke to throw bullpen Sunday

(12:47 pm ET) Padres pitcher Cory Luebke will throw his first bullpen session Sunday, MLB.com reports. Luebke is returning from two Tommy John surgeries and hasn't appeared in a game since April 2012.

Brad Peacock to make spring debut for Astros

Peacock has been sidelined with a hip injury.


Blue Jays' Marco Estrada tosses three innings Saturday

(12:17 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada allowed one earned run on five hits in three innings while striking out three and walking none Saturday.

Estrada had been pushed back twice due to an ankle injury but was able to return to the mound Saturday. He has posted a 7.59 ERA in 10 2/3 innings this spring.


Twins' Molitor: 'Time is running out' for Josmil Pinto

(11:57 am ET) Twins manager Paul Molitor said that "time is running out" for Josmil Pinto to break camp with the club.

Pinto has missed the last eight days after getting hit in the head three times by a backswing. 

Pinto, who failed his last concussion test, will be evaluated again on Sunday. If he passes, he could play on Monday. Molitor warned that it may already be too late, however, per MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger

Pinto has been competing with Chris Herrmann for the Twins' backup catcher spot. Herrmann is hitting .300 this spring with a homer and three RBI. 


Tigers' Bruce Rondon (neck) won't pitch Sunday

(11:54 am ET) Tigers pitcher Bruce Rondon (neck) felt better Sunday morning but won't pitch at all Sunday, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Rondon is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and while he has looked healthy this spring, he's not a lock to break camp with the team. He has given up four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings this spring.


Astros' L.J. Hoes still sore, still awaiting X-ray

(11:51 am ET) Astros outfielder L.J. Hoes is still sore after being hit in the wrist by a pitch on Saturday, manager A.J. Hinch said.

The team is still awaiting an X-ray, and Hoes will be held out of all activities on Sunday.

"Hopefully we've avoided something worse," Hinch said, per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.

 


Tigers' Justin Verlander feels better, light tosses Sunday

(11:48 am ET) Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said pitcher Justin Verlander said he was feeling better Sunday, and Verlander was able to take part in light tossing, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Verlander left Friday's start due to cramping in his triceps. Ausmus said Saturday that there were no plans to send the pitcher for an MRI.
