Astros 'very, very busy' fielding calls about Jarred Cosart
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:01 am ET) The Astros are "very, very busy" fielding calls about starting pitcher Jarred Cosart, sources told FOX Sports.

If Cosart is traded, it will not be the first time he was dealt on or near the non-waiver trade deadline. Cosart was a key piece in the July 2011 trade that sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies in exchange for Cosart, Jon Singleton, Josh Zeid and a player to be named later, which eventually was Domingo Santana.

Report: Twins acquire Tommy Milone from busy Athletics
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10:58 am ET) The Athletics promise to be very busy ahead of the trade deadline, and they made another move Thursday, agreeing to trade pitcher Tommy Milone to the Twins, according to FOXSports.com.

Milone has been pushed out of the Athletics' crowded rotation, but had a 3.55 ERA in 96 1/3 innings before he was sent to the minors. Details of the return to Oakland are not yet known.

Joe Kelly blames struggles on poor fastball command
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:55 am ET) Cardinals starting pitcher Joe Kelly suffered his first loss in four starts since coming off the disabled list Wednesday at San Diego. However, he's struggled for the most part since his activation despite the one loss.

The right-hander has posted a 7.32 ERA over his last four starts, and Kelly said his struggles have been related to poor command of his fastball, per MLB.com.

"It's running a lot," Kelly said of the pitch. "It's just something that I have to learn how to control here and be better at next time. I've been throwing good offspeed pitches, I feel, in all these games. My curveball was my best pitch (Wednesday). I should have thrown it 100 times. But you can't do that, obviously. It definitely all starts with the fastball."

Alex Rios, Neal Cotts likely on move from Texas
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10:53 am ET) The Rangers are expected to be very active ahead of Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, FOXSports.com reports.

According to the report, the Rangers were aggressively trying to move outfielder Alex Rios and reliever Neal Cotts Thursday morning. Both players have been linked to trade rumors leading up to the deadline, with the Rangers well out of the race during an injury-plagued season.

Report: Bartolo Colon going nowhere
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:49 am ET) Bartolo Colon appears all but set to remain with the Mets after the trading deadline, according to the New York Post.

The 41-year-old right-hander is owed about $3 million this season and $11 million in 2015. The Mets would vastly prefer any suitor pick up the entirety of that contract. A team insider told the Post that the Mets are hoping not to assume any of that money even if it results in a better prospect coming back.

Colon has performed well since late May after a terrible start to the year. He is 8-3 since May 12 and has lowered his ERA from 5.84 to 3.88 since that time.

Report: Teams calling Mets about Daniel Murphy
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:45 am ET) Baseball analyst Jim Duquette told MLB Network Radio Thursday that the Mets have continued to receive interest in All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy.

"Outside of (John) Danks to Miami rumor, I've heard the second-base market has heated up quite a bit," Duquette said. "The Mets could move Murphy if they want to. Not only did the Nationals and the Giants check in, but they're rumored to be interested in Murphy."

Ruben Tejada silences critics for at least one day
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:40 am ET) Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada returned to the starting lineup during Wednesday's 11-2 win against the Phillies, and for one day at least quieted the speculation he might get supplanted at shortstop by Wilmer Flores.

Tejada went 3 for 4 with one run, one RBI and one walk in the win. He entered the game mired in a 4-for-38 slump in his previous 14 games.

Ankle problem leads to knee issue for Carlos Gonzalez
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:32 am ET) An ankle injury sustained in a home accident on Saturday is taking a toll on the knee of struggling Rockies star Carlos Gonzalez, the Denver Post has reported.

"I'm hanging in there," Gonzalez said. "My ankle is getting a little better each day. But now that my right ankle hurts, I'm favoring it and I'm putting pressure on my left knee. I'm trying to avoid that pain on my ankle."

Gonzalez, who sat out Wednesday, is dealing with tendinitis in the knee. He's also dealing with a slump at the plate that has lowered his batting average to .243 and on-base percentage to .294. He has 64 strikeouts and just 17 walks on the season in 243 at-bats. Gonzalez has six hits in his last 38 at-bats without a multi-hit game since before the All-Star break.

Mark Appel tosses five scoreless innings in Double-A debut
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:31 am ET) Astros starting pitcher prospect Mark Appel shined in his debut for Double-A Corpus Christi Wednesday. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft tossed five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks, while recording four strikeouts.

"I thought it was a good outing," Astros senior pitching advisor Doug Brocail, who's serving as interim pitching coach at Corpus Christi, told MLB.com. "He went out and stuck with the game plan. He has some work to do, but he threw up five zeroes. I'll take zeros any way we can get them."

Ian Kennedy ready to roll for Saturday start
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:17 am ET) Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy threw on the side Wednesday after missing a start due to an oblique strain, per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Kennedy is all but set to start Saturday against Atlanta. He will try to bounce back from two mediocre outings in which he yielded seven earned runs in 11 innings pitched.
