Mets get RP Eric O'Flaherty in trade with A's on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:56 pm ET) The Mets have acquired left-handed reliever Eric O'Flaherty and cash from the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later. With Jerry Blevins (broken forearm) still without a timetable, the Mets were in needed of another lefty specialist in the bullpen.

O'Flaherty, 30, was designated for assignment by the A's back on Saturday. He went 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA over 21 1/3 innings with the A's this season. He has battled injuries over the past couple of years, totaling 40 appearances between 2013 and 2014.

But in his glory days, O'Flaherty posted some very impressive numbers. In 2011-2012, he recorded a shiny 1.31 ERA in 131 innings for the Braves.

In a corresponding move, the Mets designated reliever Alex Torres for assignment.

Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka earns eighth win of the year
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:51 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work in New York's 13-3 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. Tanaka, who struck out three and walked just one, didn't run into problems until the fifth inning.

Tanaka allowed runners on first and third with one out before allowing a Blake Swihart single to left center to plate a run. Then, a Jackie Bradley sac fly scored another run. Tanaka then allowed a solo home run to Pablo Sandoval in the sixth.

Tanaka, now 8-4, moved his ERA to 3.84 in 93 2/3 innings of work. He will look to keep things rolling Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Brewers' Brandon Kintzler tosses scoreless inning in rehab game
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:49 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Brandon Kintzler began his rehab assignment Tuesday by tossing a scoreless inning for the team's Rookie League affiliate. Kintzler struck out one batter and did not give up a hit during his one inning of work.

Kintzler has not pitched since late May due to tendinitis in his left knee.

Hunter Pence leads Giants to victory with late homer on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:48 pm ET) Right fielder Hunter Pence put the Giants up for good, when he hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Braves. Pence, who drove in four runs in the game, blasted his seventh home run of the year, breaking a 3-3 tie late in the game.

Pence has cooled off a bit lately, batting .250 (8 for 32) with two home runs in his past eight games.

Braves SP Shelby Miller let down by bullpen in loss Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:44 pm ET) Braves pitcher Shelby Miller posted the third quality start in his past six outings, but was left with a no-decision in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Giants. Miller allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out three, throwing 65 of 106 pitches for strikes on the evening.

Miller left the game in line for the win, with the Braves leading 3-2 after seven innings. But the Braves' bullpen gave up six runs over the final two innings, en route to the five-run loss.

Miller has now gone more than two months since his last win, with May 17 being the last time he won a start, despite posting a 3.14 ERA over that stretch.

Red Sox pitcher Henry Owens decent in major league debut
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(10:44 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Henry Owens allowed three runs on five hits in 5+ innings of work in Boston's 13-3 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday. Owens struggled in the first when he allowed three consecutive batters to reach safely, including Mark Teixeira, who singled home a run.

Then in the sixth, Owens allowed a single and a double before getting pulled for a reliever. Both runners scored when the following three players reached base safely. Owens, now 0-1, struck out five and walked just one. He now owns a 5.40 ERA and will look to get back on track Sunday against the Tigers.

Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis throws bullpen session Tuesday
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:42 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis threw a bullpen session Tuesday for the first time since landing on the disabled list in mid-July, reports MLB.com.

Bettis threw 35 pitches during the session. He is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday and then begin his rehab assignment. Bettis is on the DL due to elbow inflammation.

"It was just something that flared up," Bettis said. "Now that we have a better understanding of how to go about this for myself and my career, to make sure I'm taking care of it, it's not going to be an issue.”

Giants' Jake Peavy throws quality start, takes no-decision Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:38 pm ET) Giants starter Jake Peavy turned in a strong outing on Tuesday, but was left with a no-decision in the 8-3 win over the Braves on Tuesday. Peavy allowed one run on five hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out a season-high eight batters.

Peavy left the game with the Giants leading 2-1. But the bullpen allowed the Braves to take the lead in the seventh. The Giants were able to rally back however, as they put up a four-spot in the top of the eighth, en route to the five-run victory.

This was the third straight quality start for Peavy. The veteran right-hander has looked a lot better on the mound since returning from a 2 1/2 month stay on the disabled list with a back injury. He has pitched at least six innings in all six starts since his return, going 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA.

Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano to start Saturday
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:31 pm ET) After briefly pitching in Monday's postponed game, Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano will make his next start Saturday against the Dodgers, reports TribLive.com.

"You want to go out there and pitch and go deep in the game, but things happen for a reason," Liriano said. "I try to put it behind me, not think about it. I just wait another five days, and try to do my same routine. If they want me to go early, I'll go early. If they say I wait five days, then I wait five days."

Marlins' Brad Hand throws four shutout innings in spot start
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:30 pm ET) Making his first start since June 8, Marlins left-hander Brad Hand pitched well against the Mets on Tuesday. Hand, who threw two innings of relief on Friday, tossed four scoreless innings on Tuesday. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three, but he did not factor in the decision in the 5-1 loss.

Hand left the game with his team leading 1-0, but the Mets tied the game in the sixth and tacked on four more in the eighth.

With the recent trades the Marlins made, dealing away Mat Latos and Dan Haren, it remains to be seen if Hand becomes a permanent member of the rotation, or if he will head back to the bullpen.
