Castro tagged his eighth homer of the season to right field to spark a raucous celebration for the Astros, who have now solidfied their hold on first place in the AL West after this huge series.

It was Castro's first home run since June 12 and his first RBI since July 3.

(11:34 pm ET) Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson had a strong outing against the Cubs on Thursday. The youngster fired seven shutout innnings, allowing just two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. He threw 104 pitches on the evening.

Despite the brilliant effort, Nelson was left with a no-decision after the bullpen allowed the Cubs to score five runs over the final two innings in the 5-2 Cubs' win.

Nelson had a strong month of July, going 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in five starts.

Pirates SP A.J. Burnett rocked by Reds
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:33 pm ET) A.J. Burnett was roughed-up by the Reds on Thursday in one of his worst starts of the season, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings as the Pirates were blown out.

Burnett gave up a first-inning home run and wasn't very effective after that. He threw 97 pitches in his short stint, walking two and striking out four.

Burnett has now lost two straight games, and has seen his ERA rise from 1.99 on July 6 to 3.06.

Cubs SP Jake Arrieta takes no-decision despite quality start
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:30 pm ET) Cubs starter Jake Arrieta was solid against the Brewers on Thursday, but was left with a no-decision in the 5-2 win. Arrieta allowed two runs on five hits over six innings, walking three and striking out six.

Arrieta actually left the game trailing 2-0, but the Cubs were able to rally back late in the game to get the right-hander off the hook.

Arrieta was brilliant in his six July starts. He went 4-1 with an impressive 1.90 ERA and a 44:11 K:BB ratio. He has now thrown eight consecutive quality starts.

Axford has now blown each of his last four save opportunities, and has allowed eight earned runs over his last 3 2/3 innings, spanning five appearances.

Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez struggles in no-decision on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:21 pm ET) Cardinals young starter Carlos Martinez endured a rough outing against the Rockies on Thursday. The right-hander allowed five runs on 10 hits over five innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. He was left with a no-decision, as the Cardinals won 9-8 in walk-off fashion.

Martinez had a 2-1 lead after the second inning. But in the fourth, he gave up three more runs, including a two-run home run by the opposing pitcher Chris Rusin. Martinez allowed another run to score in the fifth before his night was done. He threw 100 pitches (69 strikes) in his five innings of work.

This was Martinez's worst start in quite some time, as it was the first time he had allowed more than three runs since May 9. In five starts this month, Martinez went 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA.

Reds OF Marlon Byrd has three hits, three RBIs in romp
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:20 pm ET) Reds outfielder Marlon Byrd hammered his 17th home run of the season to start a 15-run explosion for his team in an easy win over the Pirates on Thursday.

Byrd went 3-for-6 in the game, with his biggest hit coming in the first inning, when he connected for a three-run homer off Pirates starter A.J. Burnett. Byrd added a double later in the contest. He now has 37 RBIs on the season.

Rockies SP Chris Rusin homers, gets rocked by Cardinals Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:17 pm ET) Rockies starter Chris Rusin got shelled by the Cardinals on Thursday. The left-hander allowed six runs on 10 hits over five innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five, and he did not factor in the decision as the Rockies lost 9-8 in walk-off fashion.

Rusin got off to a shaky start, allowing four runs through the first two innings, including a three-run homer by Matt Carpenter in the second. Carpenter got to Rusin again in the fifth, as he blasted a solo shot as part of a two-run inning.

The young hurler did help his own cause in this one, as he went 2 for 2 at the plate, including his first career home run--a two-run shot in the fourth inning.

The Rockies' southpaw finishes July 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA over six appearances--five starts.
