by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2:50 pm ET) The Mariners traded pitcher Stephen Pryor to the Twins Thursday in exchange for DH Kendrys Morales, who played for Seattle in 2013.

Mariners trade for Twins DH Kendrys Morales
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2:45 pm ET) The Mariners acquired DH Kendrys Morales in a trade with the Twins Thursday. Seattle sent pitcher Stephen Pryor to Minnesota in exchange for the veteran slugger.

Morales heads to Seattle having hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games. However, he is batting just .234 with one home run and 18 RBI in 39 games since joining the Twins' lineup June 9.

Morales played for Seattle in 2013, batting .277 with 23 home runs and 80 RBI in 156 games. He has a .287 average, 19 home runs and 69 RBI in 117 games in his career at Safeco Field.

Red Sox need to free up PT before Will Middlebrooks returns
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2:10 pm ET) Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks (finger) is heating up offensively during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket, hitting safely in five straight games. He's had mutliple hits three times and homered twice in that span.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Middlebrooks continues to improve, but he has no timetable for his return to the majors, per MLB.com. With Stephen Drew, Xander Bogaerts and Brock Holt rotating on the left side of the infield, the Red Sox are going to have to clear up some playing time for Middlebrooks before he's activated off the disabled list.

"We've communicated this clearly to Will," Farrell said. "He's very well aware of the need to get regular at-bats. We've got to do some things to maybe adjust the roster to accommodate that. Whether that happens naturally this upcoming week, that remains to be seen -- with roster adjustments or any potential trades.

"Before even saying anything about that, I'd be getting way too far ahead of myself. But more importantly, Will is healthy, swinging the bat well and playing daily."

Red Sox praise Brock Holt for versatility
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2:01 pm ET) Red Sox infielder/outfielder Brock Holt made his first start at second base Thursday at Toronto, becoming the first player in franchise history to start at every position besides pitcher and catcher.

Though, manager John Farrell said he has no plans to give Holt a start behind the plate any time soon.

"He's done a great job, there's no doubt," Farrell said, per MLB.com. "We like to think that because of injuries, it's opened up and created some opportunities for him. If we had our choice, we would've liked to avoid all that. ... But in light of what's taken place this year, it's one of the better stories. [He's] a guy we can plan around in a number of ways as we go forward."

Joakim Soria expected to pitch mostly in seventh inning
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1:56 pm ET) Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said newly acquired reliever Joakim Soria will probably pitch mostly in the seventh inning, according to the Detroit Free Press.

However, he said Soria could help in the eighth or ninth inning when setup man Joba Chamberlain and closer Joe Nathan need a day off.

"The ability to get left-handed and right-handed hitters out is extremely important," Dombrowski said. "In our situation, where you are trying to win, I think it’s important to be able to do that. You don’t want to be switching every hitter with a different pitcher if you can avoid that. Soria has shown that he can get left-handed and right-handed hitters out very well. I think that’s important."

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1:23 pm ET) The Orioles acquired infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes from the Royals in exchange for cash considerations. Paredes was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk following the trade.

Yoenis Cespedes sits Thursday due to thumb injury
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1:14 pm ET) Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was held out of the starting lineup Thursday against the Astros after leaving Wednesday's game due to a thumb injury. Brandon Moss was in left field Thursday for Oakland.

Manager Bob Melvin said Cespedes might be available off the bench Thursday and could be back in the lineup Friday at Texas.

Cespedes has been on a roll out of the All-Star break, hitting safely in his first five games. He is batting .381 (8 for 21) with two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and six runs in that span.
