Diamondbacks catcher Welingon Castillo hitting his stride
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:31 am ET) Things are looking up for Diamondbacks catcher Welington Castillo. Not that his season could have reached much greater depths.

Castillo is finally receiving significant playing time with Arizona and has responded. He has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 starts and walked twice in one of the others. The result is an average that has soared from .150 to .213 since June 10 with five doubles and three home runs.

His on-base percentage of .282 is at its highest point since May 7, when he was still playing for the Cubs.

Steve Pearce finally flashing for Orioles
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:17 am ET) Orioles second baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce has a lot of catching up to do if he even wants to approach his surprising production of a year ago. But he is making up for lost time recently.

Pearce slammed three more singles Sunday with two runs and an RBI. He is batting .444 (8-for-18) over his last five games with three doubles. His .233 average is at its highest point since April 8.

Mets' Lagares heats up to start July after ending June mired in slump
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:11 am ET) Mets center fielder Juan Lagares got in on New York's eight-run, 15-hit outburst Sunday against the Dodgers.

Lagares totaled two hits in the 8-0 win, including his fourth triple of the season. He drove in two runs with the two-out triple off Juan Nicasio in the top of the seventh inning.

Lagares has hit safely in three of four games to open July. He is batting .267 (4 for 15) with one double, one triple, three RBI and two runs in that span. Lagares' latest run comes after he finished June in a 2-for-31 slump.

Tigers CF Anthony Gose slams second homer Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:11 am ET) The home run hit by Tigers center fielder Anthony Gose on Sunday certainly fell into the "too-little, too-late" category, but it still came as a pleasant surprise. He only has two on the season.

Gose blasted off in the seventh inning to merely cut the deficit to 9-4. He even got pinch-hit for in his next at-bat and finished 1-for-3. But he does own a respectable slash line on the year of .274/.317/.371.

He has also hit safely in each of his last five starts and owns a .333 average (7-for-21) during that stretch.

Angels 2B Johnny Giavotella begins July with four-game hit streak
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:59 am ET) Angels second baseman Johnny Giavotella has opened July with a four-game hit streak, as he went 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs Sunday against the Rangers.

Giavotella had a sac fly in the second inning and an RBI single in the third. He also had his 13th double Sunday.

Giavotella is batting .368 (7 for 19) with two doubles, four RBI, two runs and two sac flies through four July games.

Blue Jays' Devon Travis batting .406 in nine games since DL activation
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:53 am ET) Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis drove in three runs during a 10-5 win Sunday at Detroit.

Travis gave Toronto a 2-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning. He then added an RBI single in the seventh inning and a sac fly in the ninth inning. He finished 2 for 3 with one run, one walk and one strikeout.

Travis continues to perform well since returning from the disabled list in late June. He has hit safely in seven straight games and eight of nine games since his activation. He is batting .406 (13 for 32) with three doubles, five RBI, six runs, one walk and five strikeouts in his last nine games.

Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak homers for third time in July
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:36 am ET) Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak homered for the third time in July on Sunday against the Tigers. Smoak connected for his eighth home run -- a solo homer off Justin Verlander in the fifth inning.

Smoak finished 1 for 4 with two runs, one walk and one strikeout. He is batting .400 (4 for 10) with three home runs, four RBI, five runs, three walks and one strikeout in three July games.

Mariners' Robinson Cano says stomach illness has sapped strength
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:16 am ET) When you take a look at Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano's numbers in 2015, it's easy to see the production is not there for the six-time All-Star.

Cano's power numbers haven't been the same since he joined Seattle on a 10-year, $240 million contract last season. However, it seems Cano's power numbers are really down this season due to an illness he has been battling since August, according to USA Today.

Cano began experiencing stomach discomfort last August. Since the Mariners were in a playoff chase, Cano did not get checked out until after the season was over. He was told he had a common parasite, which was treated with antibiotics. However, Cano said the illness sapped him of his energy and is still dealing with acid reflux.

"It still affects me,'' Cano said. "Sometimes you drink water and it makes you feel like vomiting. I can't eat the same way I did. It's hard to deal with, especially being the first time this has happened to me. Sometimes I eat only once a day before playing, because I feel full. And you just don't have the same energy.

"Sometimes I play without any strength or energy, but you have to play, give the best of yourself. Some people may say, 'Cano, he's listless.' But (the energy) is not the same.''

Rays' Colome likely moving to bullpen with Odorizzi nearing return
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:54 am ET) Rays starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi (oblique) is expected to rejoin the rotation Saturday against the Astros after making his last rehab start Monday with Class A Charlotte, according to The Tampa Tribune

Odorizzi is expected to replace Alex Colome in the rotation. With no options left on his contract, Colome will be moved to the bullpen.

“It’s tough to change things when it’s working really well, and those guys have pitched well,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “But Jake Odorizzi, we need him in this rotation.”

Phillies 2B Chase Utley could start hitting within a week
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:45 am ET) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who is on the 15-day disabled list due to right ankle inflammation, might start hitting within a week, general manager Ruben Amaro said Sunday, per the The Philadelphia Daily News.
