Yoenis Cespedes leaves due to 'family medical emergency'

(11:56 pm ET) Red Sox outfielder Yoenis Cespedes left Thursday's game due to a "family medical emergency."

Manager John Farrell did not want to get into specifics regarding the issue out of respect to Cespedes. The club is hopeful that Cespedes will be able to play Friday. He was replaced by Will Middlebrooks in the fourth inning. 


Steven Souza picks up a hit, RBI in first rehab game

(11:19 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Steven Souza knocked in a run during his first rehab game Thursday.

Souza went 1 for 2, with an RBI during the game. He struck out in his other plate appearance. He also managed to steal a base. Souza has been sidelined since August 9 due to a shoulder injury. 


Stolmy Pimentel tosses scoreless inning on rehab

(11:14 pm ET) Pirates reliever Stolmy Pimentel tosssed a scoreless inning during a rehab start Thursday.

Pimental got the start for the Double-A club in Altoona. He threw a perfect inning, picking up one strikeout. Pimental threw nine pitches, seven of which were strikes. 


Padres release Brooks Conrad

(11:05 pm ET) The Padres have released infielder Brooks Conrad .

Conrad was recently designated for assignment by the club. They chose to cut him loose instead of trying to send him to the minors. Conrad hit .100 over 30 at-bats in the majors. 


Andrelton Simmons goes deep Thursday

(10:59 pm ET) Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons went yard Thursday against the Reds. 

Simmons struck in his first at-bat. He worked a seven-pitch at-bat against David Holmberg, hitting a 75 mph curveball for a solo shot. He drove in another run on a groundout during the game. Simmons finished 1 for 5, with one run scored and two RBI. 


Aroldis Chapman makes an appearance during blowout

(10:52 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman made an appearance during a blowout Thursday.

With his team trailing 8-0, Chapman entered the game in the eighth inning. He was his usual self, striking out two hitters and getting Chris Johnson to flyout. Chapman had not pitching in a few days due to shoulder soreness. He was replaced by Skip Schumaker in the ninth inning. 


Jason Grilli picks up first save with new club

(10:49 pm ET) Angels pitcher Jason Grilli picked up his first save since joining the club Thursday.

Grilli entered with a two-run lead, and slammed the door shut. He struck out the first batter he faced, and induced a flyout and a groundout to end the game. Huston Street was unavailable after pitching the past two days. It was Grilli's 12th save of the season, and first since becoming a member of the Angels. 


Matt Shoemaker dominates Red Sox Thursday

(10:29 pm ET) Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker gave up one hit against the Red Sox.

Shoemaker went 7 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and one walk. He struck out nine during the outing. Shoemaker was actually throwing a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings before Will Middlebrooks doubled. Middlebrooks did not start the game, and was a replacement for Yoenis Cespedes, who left due to personal reasons. Shoemaker gave up his walk in the eighth inning, and was pulled from the game at that point. He threw 116 pitches during the start.

With the win, Shoemaker improved to 12-4. He’ll take on the Marlins in his next start. 


Rubby De La Rosa loses despite strong start

(10:28 pm ET) Red Sox starter Rubby De La Rosa turned in a strong performance Thursday against the Angels.

De La Rosa allowed two runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three during the outing. De La Rosa ran into trouble early, giving up a single and a run-scoring double in the first inning. He settled in at that point, tossing five scoreless before the seventh. Erick Aybar led off the inning with a double, and came around to score on a sac fly. De La Rosa was replaced after giving up a single to Mike Trout.

De La Rosa was matched by Matt Shoemaker during the outing, and was a hard luck loser. He fell to 4-5. He’ll take on the Blue Jays in his next start.


Julio Teheran turns in a strong start

(10:27 pm ET) Braves pitcher Julio Teheran turned in a strong start Thursday against the Reds.

Teheran allowed four hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out three and did not issue any walks during the outing. Teheran was perfect over the first two innings, but hit the leadoff man and gave up a single in the third. Despite those issues, he was able to get through the inning unscathed. The only other time the Reds threatened with Teheran on the mound was in the sixth inning, when Brandon Phillips reached second with a double. Teheran was able to work around the hit. He threw 87 pitches during the outing. 

With the win, Teheran improved to 12-9. He’ll take on the Mets in his next start.
