Matt Garza a hard luck loser Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6:07 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Matt Garza was a hard luck loser Thursday against the Phillies.

Garza was exceptional early on, holding the Phillies hitless through six innings. He managed to pitch around two singles in the seventh, but ran into some trouble in the eighth. Garza gave up a double and a walk during the inning, though did manage to notch two outs. He was pulled from the game at that point. Will Smith came on in relief and immediately allowed a two-run single. Both runs were charged to Garza, giving him the loss.

Garza's record dropped to 6-6 with the loss. His next start will come shortly after the All-Star break.

Preston Guilmet brought up Thursday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6:03 pm ET) The Orioles recalled pitcher Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk Thursday, to replace Bud Norris on the active roster.

Guilmet was with the team for a doubleheader last week, and has a 5.79 ERA in 9 1/3 innings in the majors.

David Buchanan strong against the Brewers Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6:02 pm ET) Phillies starter David Buchanan turned in a strong start Thursday against the Brewers.

Buchanan gave up one run on four hits over seven innings. His only blemish was a solo home run by Carlos Gomez in the sixth inning. Other than that, Buchanan pitched well. He was actually set to take the loss through seven innings, but the Phillies offense came alive in the top of the eighth, scoring seven runs.

The win moves Buchanan to 5-5 on the year. It's unclear where he'll slot into the team's rotation following the All-Star break.

Bud Norris sent down for All-Star break
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:59 pm ET) The Orioles optioned pitcher Bud Norris to Double-A Bowie Thursday, in order to call up some relief help prior to the All-Star break.

Norris was sent down after the team decided he was not an option to start Sunday. He will stay on turn during the break while pitching for Bowie, and will likely make a start Monday. He would be eligible to return to the majors July 20, though it is not clear if that is the plan yet.

Homer Bailey not expected to miss his next start
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:56 pm ET) Reds pitcher Homer Bailey is not expected to miss his next start following a knee issue.

Bailey had to leave Thursday's game against the Cubs due to a knee injury, but it isn't considered serious. The injury is considered a slight knee strain. Bailey underwent a precautionary MRI for the issue, but is still expected to make his next start.

Arismendy Alcantara looking at more playing time
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:47 pm ET) Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara will remain in the majors for the time being.

The team optioned pitcher Kyle Hendricks to the minors following Thursday's start, meaning Alcantara will get a longer run in the majors. He was expected to receive just two days in the majors while Darwin Barney was on paternity leave. Alcantara went 4 for 5 Thursday, helping his cause.

Kyle Hendricks sent back to Triple-A
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:43 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks was sent down to Triple-A following Thursday's start.

Hendricks allowed four runs over six innings of work. The move signals that the team is willing to give infielder Arismendy Alcantara more time in the majors. It's unclear whether Hendricks will be up again shortly after the All-Star break.

Billy Hamilton able to pinch-hit Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:34 pm ET) Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton was able to pinch-hit Thursday against the Cubs.

Hamilton did not start due to a hamstring injury, but it doesn't appear to be serious. Hamilton came on in the bottom of the 10th and worked a four-pitch at-bat against Hector Rondon. He flew out to right to end the inning. Hamilton was then replaced by a pitcher, and did not play the field.

Yankees expect Carlos Beltran to return shortly after ASG
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:33 pm ET) Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters that he expects outfielder Carlos Beltran to return from the 7-day concussion disabled list just shortly after the All-Star break, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Beltran was placed on the DL Thursday after being struck by a batted ball during batting practice Wednesday. He batted .216 with nine homers and 28 RBI in 232 at-bats before the injury.
