Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello tagged for eight runs Sunday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5:11 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello had a game to forget Sunday in Boston's 8-3 loss to the Orioles. Porcello allowed eight runs on 12 hits, including two home runs, in five innings of work to pick up his second loss of the season.

Porcello struggled from the start, allowing a two-run home run to Adam Jones in the first inning. Then he allowed a solo shot to Ryan Flaherty in the second before settling in. But things unraveled in the fifth when Porcello allowed three of the first four hitters to reach base safely before Travis Snider singled home a run with the bases loaded. Then Manny Machado dropped a sacrifice fly to extend Baltimore's lead.

Porcello, now 1-2, boasts a 6.63 ERA and will look to get back on track Friday against the Orioles again.

Diamondbacks giving Tomas opportunity to adjust to big leagues
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:10 pm ET) Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas has seen just three at-bats since being called up from the minors, but the team is content to let him adjust to the majors before saddling him with a regular role, MLB.com reports.

"He's on a certain program that we think is going to help him in his progression to being an everyday player," manager Chip Hale said. "People are having a hard time believing it because he's not getting at-bats every day, which is hard. But he's doing [work] offensively with our hitting coaches and then the strength coach; they're really working hard to get him to where we think he needs to be to be an everyday player."

Tomas was just 4 for 21 with one home run with Triple-A Reno before being brought up to Arizona.

Yoenis Cespedes powers Tigers to win
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Cespedes went 2 for 4 and raised his average to .300 for the season. He now has three home runs and 10 RBI.

Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez earns second win Sunday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5:04 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez went five innings Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits in Baltimore's 8-3 win over the Red Sox. Gonzalez, who also struck out five on the day, only had issues in the first inning.

After putting two of the first three batters on base, Gonzalez surrendered a first pitch home run over the Green Monster to Hanley Ramirez to score three. Gonzalez settled in after that, allowing just three hits over his final three innings of work. Gonzalez, now 2-1, boasts a 2.55 ERA in three starts and will look to keep rolling Friday against the Red Sox again.

White Sox's Jose Quintana pounded in loss
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5:04 pm ET) White Sox starter Jose Quintana gave up nine runs and 10 hits in four innings to suffer his first loss of the year.

Quintana gave up two home runs to Yoenis Cespedes, including a grand slam. He walked one and struck out one, while falling to 1-1 on the year with an 8.40 ERA. Quintana threw 56 strikes out of 93 pitches.

Quintana's next start will be Friday against Kansas City and Danny Duffy.

Mets' Vic Black headed for more tests
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5:03 pm ET) Mets pitcher Vic Black will undergo an MRI due to continued soreness in the shoulder and neck region, The Star-Ledger reports.

General manager Sandy Alderson indicated that Black is also dealing with another issue he can't pinpoint, so the team will turn to more testing to try and discover the issue. Black had been on a Class A rehab assignment but appears to be headed for a longer time on the disabled list than previously believed.

Mets expected to call up C Kevin Plawecki
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4:58 pm ET) The Mets are expected to promote Triple-A catcher Kevin Plawecki after Travis d'Arnaud suffered a fractured hand Sunday, the New York Daily News reports.

"Can he handle it here?" manager Terry Collins said after Sunday's win, his team's eighth straight. "We’ll likely find out."

Plawecki was pulled from his minor-league game early Sunday, all but confirming that he'll be on his way up to New York to serve as the team's No. 1 catcher while d'Arnaud is sidelined. Plawecki is just 8 for 35 this season but hit .309/.365/.460 with 11 home runs and 64 RBI in 376 at-bats between Double-A and Triple-A last season.

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(4:54 pm ET) X-Rays for Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer revealed no fracture in his rib-cage area, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Mercer left Sunday's game against the Brewers after getting hit with a pitch from Matt Garza in his rib-cage area while attempting to bunt.

The pitch caught him in the left ribs just below the chest.

Mercer's status for Monday against the Cubs remains questionable.
