Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka allows three runs in no-decision Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/3/2015) Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka showed improvement in his outing on Friday, but still took a no-decision in the extra-innings victory over the Rays. Tanaka allowed three runs on six hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five.

Tanaka, whose ERA rose to 3.94, gave up two runs in the first inning to put his team down early. But the Yankees' offense was able to rally back late in the game to get Tanaka off the hook.

Tanaka had allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts, so Friday was certainly a step in the right direction. Since returning from the disabled list on June 3, Tanaka has a 4.37 ERA in 37 innings pitched.

Royals OF Lorenzo Cain gets three hits in victory
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain collected three hits in Friday night's 3-2 win over the Twins in 10 innings.

Cain recorded a double, his 16th of the season, and two singles. Cain has been on a roll lately as he recorded three hits in a game for the second time in the past four starts. In this span, Cain has posted a .565 batting average.

Cain is now slashing .305/.360/.461 this season.

Red Sox Justin Masterson escapes with no-decision
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Red Sox starter Justin Masterson was knocked out of the box by Houston after 3 2/3 innings, but he escaped with a no-decision as Boston batters rallied later in the game.

Masterson gave up five runs on eight hits, his second early knockout in three starts. He gave up six runs in 2 1/3 on May 12 and has a 9.00 ERA in his last three starts.

Rough start for Astros' Dan Straily ends in no-decision
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Astros pitcher Dan Straily started Friday's game against Boston, his first MLB appearance of the season.

Straily gave up five runs, four earned, over 4 2/3 innings, but he escaped with a no decision, as Houston batters put up 12 runs to win late.

It was Straily's shortest start since May 2 of last year and the most runs he's allowed in a start since April 15 of last season.

Twins P Tommy Milone has solid outing in no-decision
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Twins pitcher Tommy Milone allowed one earned run in a no-decision during Friday night's 3-2 loss to the Royals.

Milone went six innings, gave up five hits, walked two batters and struck out five. This gives Milone 12 total strikeouts over his past two starts. For the season, Milone now has a 3.02 ERA.

Twins RP Alex Meyer optioned to Triple-A on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/3/2015) The Twins have optioned right-hander Alex Meyer to Triple-A Rochester, following Friday's 3-2 loss to the Royals. Meyer, who made two appearances last week in his first taste of the big leagues, will remain in the bullpen with Rochester.

Meyer's demotion clears a roster spot for Ervin Santana, who will be returning from a suspension on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Royals P Jeremy Guthrie strikes out four in no-decision
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie allowed two earned runs in a no-decision during Friday night's 3-2 win over the Twins.

This is the second start in a row that saw Guthrie give up two runs but the first in his past four starts where he surrendered less than seven hits. Guthrie was tagged for five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. He struck out four batters and walked one.

Guthrie now has a 5.42 ERA.

Rays' Chris Archer posts excellent start against Yankees on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/3/2015) Rays right-hander Chris Archer was terrific against the Yankees on Friday. Archer kept the Yankees scoreless over 6 2/3 innings, but he was left with a no-decision as the bullpen blew a 3-0 lead. The Yankees would go on to win 7-5 in extra innings.

Archer, who lowered his ERA to a fine 2.18, allowed three hits and three walks while striking out eight. He threw a career-high 122 pitches on the evening, but was generally in command for the most part.

This was a solid bounceback effort for Archer, who, despite recording 10 strikeouts, allowed five earned runs in his last start.

Padres' Justin Upton steals 16th base of year
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2015) Padres left fielder Justin Upton went 1 for 4 in Friday's win over St. Louis.
