If all goes well, Fernandez could return by mid-September. A biceps strain has kept him out since early August.


Nationals' Michael Taylor undergoes MRI, hopes to return soon

(7:49 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Michael Taylor underwent an MRI on his troublesome knee and everything came back looking good, reports The Washington Post.

"I'm ready," Taylor said. "I'm not playing [Friday]. I'm available off the bench. I think it's the same thing as before. The swelling came back a little bit, little bit of stiffness."


Marlins consider Giancarlo Stanton day to day

(7:43 pm ET) Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is considered day to day in his recovery from a fracture in his wrist, reports Fox Sports. Stanton went 0 for 2 during a rehab game Tuesday, but left after not feeling right.

"It's a just a matter of when the wrist and the soreness goes out of the hand," manager Dan Jennings said. "I think it's a plus that he went down to try the rehab start and test himself to see where he is. Now it's just how much time it will take before he can come back and be as close to 100 percent and the comfort level of his strength with his hand and his wrist."


Mariners' James Paxton has torn fingernail

(7:40 pm ET) Mariners pitcher James Paxton suffered a setback in his recovery from an elbow injury when he suffered a partially torn fingernail during a rehab start, reports 710 ESPN Seattle.

Paxton was removed in the fourth inning of his outing Wednesday at Triple-A. The injury is expected to halt his recovery for a few more days.


Nationals' Aaron Barrett undergoes Tommy John surgery

(7:34 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Aaron Barrett underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Thursday, reports The Washington Post. He will need at least a year to recover.

"Everything was successful," manager Matt Williams said. "He's on the road to recovery now. It's disappointing for him certainly, but he's a warrior and he'll work hard to be back."


Pirates SP A.J. Burnett expects to return soon

(7:03 pm ET) After throwing a simulated game Friday without any issues, Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett said he expects to return soon, reports Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"I feel where I need to be," said Burnett, who is on the 15-day disabled list because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. "A lot better than I expected to."

He is set to throw a bullpen session Sunday and then go from there.

"I expect to be throwing soon for the Pirates, because I feel great," he said.


Angels' Johnny Giavotella having trouble seeing

Padres' Wil Myers returns to lineup Friday
