Matt Kemp, CF, LAD

Matt Kemp

Kemp may need rehab assignment

News: Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp received a PRP injection on Tuesday, reports the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. Kemp, who is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, may be asked by manager Don Mattingly to play in at least one minor league rehab assignment game before returning to the Dodgers when eligible.
Analysis: Kemp doesn't want to stay on the shelf any longer than he has to considering Monday marked the first game he has missed since Aug. 18, 2009. Still, if Mattingly says he needs a rehab assignment, he'll get one. Kemp needs to rest and get back to his usual self once healthy. He is off to another MVP-caliber season this year with 12 homers and a .359 batting average, but should be reserved in all Fantasy formats for now.

5:28 PM

Kyle Hudson, LF, TEX

Kyle Hudson

Phillies acquire OF Hudson

News: Tampa Bay has acquired outfielder Rich Thompson from the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league outfielder Kyle Hudson, reports CSNPhilly.com.
Analysis: The 25-year-old Hudson has been playing at Triple-A Durham in the Tampa Bay organization and was batting .291. Hudson provides Philadelphia with some youthful outfield depth, but has low-end Fantasy value at this time.

5:27 PM

Rich Thompson, RF, PHI

Rich Thompson

Rays acquire OF Thompson

News: Tampa Bay has acquired outfielder Rich Thompson from the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league outfielder Kyle Hudson, reports CSNPhilly.com.
Analysis: Thompson is likely to report to Triple-A Durham, at least at first, as he could see time on the Rays' bench at some point. The 33-year-old was batting .307 this year with Philadelphia's Triple-A club Lehigh Valley. Thompson has low-end Fantasy value at this time.

5:14 PM

Carlos Quentin, LF, SD

Carlos Quentin

Quentin 'slowed' after injection

News: San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin has been "slowed" by his knee injury of late, according to Padres manager Bud Black, reports the North County Times Wednesday. Quentin had a cortisone injection on Tuesday. The Padres should have a clearer picture after Friday.
Analysis: Quentin was pulled from a rehab assignment after suffering the setback. The 29-year-old has played in two games for Lake Elsinore and recorded two hits and two RBI during seven at-bats. Black did not indicate when Quentin would be able to rejoin the Padres, however, the team is unlikely to rush him. Fantasy owners should keep Quentin reserved only in deeper formats for now.

5:09 PM

Carl Crawford, LF, BOS

Carl Crawford

Crawford close to swinging a bat

News: The Boston Herald reports Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford (wrist, elbow) might resume swinging a bat when the team returns home during Fantasy Week 8 (May 21-27).
Analysis: The rehab process hasn't been easy for Crawford since undergoing wrist surgery in mid-January. He's had a few setbacks and even developed an elbow injury. Hopefully, when he starts up again he will avoid any more issues. Crawford remains worth stashing in all Fantasy formats because he has the potential to be a must-start option.

5:05 PM

Michael Morse, LF, WAS

Michael Morse

Morse makes 60 throws

News: The Washington Times reports Nationals outfielder Michael Morse said he made 60 throws on Wednesday and felt fine.
Analysis: The Nationals are targeting a June 8 return to the lineup for Morse. He still has some hurdles left to clear before returning to the majors, but we hope this time he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Morse is coming off a career year in 2011, when he emerged as a must-start Fantasy option. He still has that potential, which is why you should keep him stashed in all formats.

4:37 PM

Logan Morrison, LF, MIA

Logan Morrison

Morrison sitting against southpaw

News: Miami outfielder Logan Morrison was given Wednesday's game in Atlanta off as the Marlins were facing left-handed starter Mike Minor. Morrison is batting .274 on the season after going 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts on Tuesday against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Morrison has struggled in May with a .216 average and just one RBI in 37 at-bats. He's really struggled all season as his power numbers are limited with two homers and nine runs driven in. Morrison still needs to sit occasionally to rest his surgically-repaired knee, and should only be active in NL-only Fantasy leagues right now.

4:04 PM

Alex Presley, LF, PIT Presley demoted to minors

Alex Presley

Presley demoted to minors

News: The Pirates announced Wednesday that outfielder Alex Presley was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Analysis: This comes as no surprise after Presley lost his starting job in left field because of a poor offensive start. Now, he will get the chance to play every day in the minors and hopefully get his offensive game on track. There's no need to hold onto Presley in Fantasy formats if you need the roster spot.

3:51 PM

Raul Ibanez, LF, NYY

Raul Ibanez

Ibanez rejoins Yankees lineup

News: After missing one start with an elbow injury, Yankees outfielder Raul Ibanez started in left field Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Analysis: It's good to see Ibanez avoid a major injury since he's been hitting well lately. Ibanez is batting .310 with four homers and 10 RBI in his last eight games. It seems the fact he's playing the field regularly again due to injuries in the Yankees' outfield is helping him stay sharp at the plate. Ibanez is worth using in deeper Fantasy formats when healthy.

3:47 PM

Denard Span, CF, MIN

Denard Span

Span suits up Wednesday

News: Twins outfielder Denard Span's absence from the starting lineup lasted just one game. Span was back in the lineup Wednesday against the Tigers after sitting out Tuesday against the Indians with a minor hamstring injury.
Analysis: This injury was never considered a major ordeal and we hope it doesn't turn into one. After a hot start to the season, Span has hit a market correction, batting .186 in his last 11 games. We kind of expected this after Span started the year with a .400 BABIP in his first 23 games. Span remains more of a low-end Fantasy option in mixed leagues.

3:27 PM

Starling Marte, CF, PIT

Starling Marte

Marte not on verge of promotion

News: Despite poor offensive numbers from the Pirates, the team is not expecting to promote prospect Starling Marte from Triple-A Indianapolis to help jump start the offense. “We’re not jumping into anything or making any rash judgements,” director of minor league operations Larry Broadway told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “There are things he’s working on down there that are specific to what he needs to do before he comes up here. The game jumps when you move up to this level. If you don’t have a solid foundation for plate discipline, it can get exposed quickly.” Baseball Prospectus analyst Kevin Goldstein agrees with Broadway. “Marte would be awful right now at the big league level,” analyst Kevin Goldstein said. “Big league pitchers would exploit him to no end.”
Analysis: Marte's biggest weakness right now is chasing pitches outside the strike zone. He's still nearly striking out once per game (27 Ks in 33 games). And it's not like Marte, who recently returned from a minor hand injury, is lighting the world on fire. He's batting just .261 with a .437 slugging percentage in 33 games. Marte did have a great spring, but he needs more Triple-A at-bats before his MLB debut. Marte is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper. He could be up later this summer, but Marte is only worth stashing in very deep seasonal formats.

Wil Myers, RF, KC Myers one step closer to majors

Wil Myers

Myers one step closer to majors

News: The Kansas City Star reports the Royals have promoted outfielder Wil Myers and starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to Triple-A Omaha.
Analysis: The promotion comes at the right time for Myers, who has six homers in his last 10 games at Double-A. For the season, he's batting .343 with a .414 OBP, .731 slugging percentage, 1.146 OPS, 13 homers and 30 RBI in 35 games. He's back folks. After a down season in 2011 due to injury, Myers is healthy in 2012 and is once again hitting like a top prospect. If he doesn't slow down at Triple-A, then a promotion to the majors could be in the cards later this summer. Myers remains a viable long-term Fantasy keeper and could be worth stashing in deeper seasonal formats, particularly AL-only.

10:32 AM

Gerardo Parra, CF, ARI

Gerardo Parra

Parra hits safely in 6 of 7 games

News: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra has hit safely in six of his last seven games after going 1 for 4 with one run, one RBI and one walk Tuesday against the Dodgers. Parra is batting .276 (8 for 29) with two RBI and three runs in that seven-game span.
Analysis: Parra is starting regularly in center field with Chris Young on the disabled list. Unfortunately, Young is on a rehab assignment and could return during Fantasy Week 7 (May 14-20), so Parra could be headed back to the bench shortly. The Diamondbacks will still find ways to get him starts, but his PT will be reduced. Parra is just a stopgap Fantasy option while Young is out.

Mike Trout, CF, LAA Trout continues torrid pace

Mike Trout

Trout continues torrid pace

News: Angels outfielder Mike Trout posted his sixth multi-hit performance since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday against the A's. He went 3 for 4 with a homer and three runs scored. He also stole his third base in the 4-0 win. Trout struck out in his first at-bat before posting back-to-back singles. Then in the seventh inning, he launched a solo shot off Bartolo Colon. Trout has gone 17 for 46 (.370) with three home runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases in his last 12 games.
Analysis: After tearing up pitching in the minors, Trout has had nearly the same success against major-league pitching and is showing why he was considered as one of the top prospects in baseball entering 2012. The 20-year-old is slugging .561 thus far and while he has struck out 17 times in 57 at-bats, his rare blend of power and speed makes him a valuable option in Fantasy. Trout will continue to see everyday at-bats for the Angels so keep him active in all formats as he is just scratching the surface of his potential.

12:16 AM

Rajai Davis, LF, TOR

Rajai Davis

Davis swipes sixth bag

News: Blue Jays outfielder Rajai Davis earned his second straight start on Tuesday night against the Rays. He went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base in the 4-3 loss. Davis reached on an infield single in his first at-bat and notched his sixth steal of the season.
Analysis: Davis continues to split time in left field with Eric Thames and is usually used as a defensive replacement late in games. While he has the speed to make a difference in Fantasy, continue to ignore the 31-year-old in all but the deepest of formats while his role is diminished.

5/15/2012

Chris Young, CF, ARI

Chris Young

Young may return before Sunday

News: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson told reporters there is an "outside shot" outfielder Chris Young could return before the team completes its road trip on Sunday. Young, on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, went 1 for 4 in a rehab start with Class A Visalia on Monday.
Analysis: Young is expected to play for Visalia on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Triple-A Reno. However, it sounds as if the Diamondbacks may bring him back after a few more appearances in Class A, assuming he doesn't suffer a setback. Fantasy owners should keep an eye his status throughout the week. Young can be considered a must-start Fantasy option when healthy.

5/15/2012

Hideki Matsui, LF, OAK

Hideki Matsui

Matsui begins work at Triple-A

News: Rays outfielder Hideki Matsui played his first game at Triple-A Durham Tuesday night. He went hitless in four at-bats and struck out once while batting fourth.
Analysis: Matsui batted .251 with 12 homers and 72 RBI for the A's last season and will likely see at-bats as DH once he gets up to speed. Owners should keep an eye on his progress down on the farm to see when he might be able to join the big club. Matsui should be considered as more of an AL-only option once he is called up.

5/15/2012

Michael Bourn, CF, ATL Bourn records another three-hit game

Michael Bourn

Bourn records another three-hit game

News: Braves outfielder Michael Bourn recorded his third three-hit game in his last five games on Tuesday night against the Reds. Bourn went 3 for 5 with three singles and scored twice in the Atlanta victory. Bourn has been on a tear at the plate and is batting .340 on the year.
Analysis: Bourn has gone 12 for 27 (.444) over a five-game hitting streak with six runs scored, a double, a triple, a homer and three RBI. The only thing he hasn't done well over that streak is steal bases, though he's up to 11 on the year in that department. Bourn continues to hit, and can be used in most mixed Fantasy leagues at this time.

5/15/2012

Adam Jones, CF, BAL

Adam Jones

Jones takes Sabathia deep

News: Orioles outfielder Adam Jones took CC Sabathia deep in the second inning of Baltimore's win over the Yankees on Tuesday. Jones hit his 11th homer of the season for a solo shot. He finished the game 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Jones also stole his sixth base of the season in the game. Jones is batting .302 on the year for the Orioles.
Analysis: Jones has homered three times with six RBI over a current seven-game hitting streak. He's recorded multi-hit games in three of his last four contests. Jones is on his way to a big season with a .302 average, 11 homers and 23 RBI with six steals to this point. He should be active in just about all mixed Fantasy leagues and formats.

5/15/2012

Curtis Granderson, CF, NYY

Curtis Granderson

Granderson hits two-run home run

News: Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson went the opposite way for his 13th home run of the season on Tuesday night in Baltimore. Granderson drove in the Yankees' only runs of the game with his two-run shot off starter Wei-Yin Chen in the seventh inning. The ball didn't seem to be hit well enough to go out, but just went over the left fielder's outstretched glove and into the seats. Granderson went 1 for 4 and is batting .257 on the year.
Analysis: Granderson also homered in Monday's game in Baltimore and has three homers at Camden Yards this season among his 13. Granderson isn't hitting for the best average, but the slugger already has 13 homers and 23 RBI and can remain active in all mixed Fantasy formats.

5/15/2012

Gregor Blanco, CF, SF

Gregor Blanco

Blanco tabbed as starting right fielder

News: Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday that Gregor Blanco is his starting right fielder right now. Blanco has gone 12 for 34 (.353) with one homer, five RBI and two stolen bases through 11 games in May.
Analysis: Blanco has started four straight games for the Giants and is beginning to pick up his production after a slow April. He won a spot on the roster with a hot spring and appears to be an everyday starter for the time being. While he does not have much pop, Blanco's speed and ability to hit for average makes him valuable in Fantasy. Consider adding the 28-year-old in NL-only formats at this point.

5/15/2012

Yoenis Cespedes, CF, OAK

Yoenis Cespedes

Cespedes not swinging bat yet

News: The A's announced Tuesday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has been cleared to resume all baseball activities expect swinging the bat. Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a strained muscle in his left hand.
Analysis: Cespedes's hand is reportedly feeling better already so it looks as though his recovery should go quickly. His timetable will become more clear once he starts swinging the bat so keep an eye on his progress going forward. The 26-year-old batted just .245 in his first 28 games in the majors but slugged five homers with 21 RBI and has some serious upside in Fantasy. Keep Cespedes stashed away in all Fantasy formats while he's on the DL.

5/15/2012

Dexter Fowler, CF, COL

Dexter Fowler

Fowler still unable to start for Rox

News: Rockies outfielder Dexter Fowler was out of the lineup for the second straight day on Tuesday against the Giants. He left Sunday's contest due to blurred vision but played an inning in the field Monday after injury cleared up.
Analysis: Fowler appears to be over his injury and should return to the lineup soon so keep an eye on his progress going forward. But since he has gone just 4 for 25 (.160) with four RBI through nine games in May, Fowler should be considered a low-end Fantasy option, when healthy.

5/15/2012

Will Venable, RF, SD

Will Venable

Venable narrowly misses cycle

News: San Diego outfielder Will Venable finished a home run shy of the cycle during the Padres' 6-1 victory over Washington on Tuesday. Venable went 4 for 5 with a single, a double and a triple in his first three at-bats before striking out against Nationals reliever Tom Gorzelanny in the sixth inning. He then laced an RBI single in the eighth inning to complete the fifth four-hit outing of his career and improve his batting average to .280.
Analysis: Venable has the potential to be a fine Fantasy contributor, but he severely lacks consistency and entered Tuesday's matchup hitting just .255. The 29-year-old, who also stole a base for the fifth time this season, has not received everyday playing time because of his prolonged stretches without a hit. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end reserve option in NL-only formats at this point.

5/15/2012

Bryce Harper, LF, WAS

Bryce Harper

Harper blasts off again

News: Washington outfielder Bryce Harper went 1 for 4 with a home run during the Nationals' 6-1 loss to San Diego on Tuesday. Harper homered for the second time in as many days as he drilled a solo homer off Padres starter Anthony Bass in the fifth inning. The shot extended his hitting streak to three games and gave him five RBI through his first 16 games in the majors. He is now carrying a .233 batting average.
Analysis: Harper is starting to show the power many hoped he would display immediately upon his promotion to Washington and is sporting a slugging percentage of .433. His strikeout rate has jumped as pitchers around the league learn the 19-year-old's tendencies and he has amassed seven strikeouts over his past seven games. He still holds great potential and should be viewed as a mid-range option in most Fantasy formats for now.
