(5/18/12) Cubs relief pitcher Kerry Wood certainly picked a memorable way to end his decorated major-league career. Wood, who said before the game he planned to retire after 13-plus seasons, was needed for only one out during a 3-2 loss to the White Sox in an interleague game on Friday. Fittingly, it was a strikeout. Wood replaced starter Jeff Samardzija in the eighth inning and fanned Dayan Viciedo on three pitches for his 1,582th career strikeout. The right-hander tipped his cap as he walked off to a standing ovation and was greeted by his son on the field before reaching the dugout for an embrace. "It was just time. ... The grind of getting ready everyday," he said of his decision to retire. "I just thank the fans for the support."
