Curtain call for Wood's career: Cubs relief pitcher Kerry Wood certainly picked a memorable way to end his decorated major-league career. Wood, who said before the game he planned to retire after 13-plus seasons, was needed for only one out during a 3-2 loss to the White Sox in an interleague game on Friday. Fittingly, it was a strikeout. Wood replaced starter Jeff Samardzija in the eighth inning and fanned Dayan Viciedo on three pitches for his 1,582th career strikeout. The right-hander tipped his cap as he walked off to a standing ovation and was greeted by his son on the field before reaching the dugout for an embrace. "It was just time. ...
