Phightin' Phils keep on mashing
(7/28/09) Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez, Pedro Feliz and Paul Bako each drove in a run Monday as the Phillies stretched their lead in the NL East to a season-high seven games over Atlanta and Florida, which were idle. The defending world champions improved to a majors-best 30-15 on the road.
Bako moves up Phils depth chart
(7/14/09) From The Sports Xchange: C Paul Bako has gained a reputation through his 12-year major-league career for his solid defense and game-calling. And while the Phillies value Bako's defense, manager Charlie Manuel said he will need to be productive offensively, too. On Saturday night, Bako served a game-winning, bases-loaded RBI single through the left side of the infield to cap an improbable five-run ninth-inning rally. "Does a catcher have to hit a whole lot? Not really, but he's got to be able to play situation baseball," Manuel said. "He's got to be able to move the runners, and he's definitely got to handle the bat good enough to handle a hit-and-run or bunt. I think he can do those things."
Bako called up by Phillies
(6/9/09) Brad Lidge was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday afternoon with a sprained right knee. The move was made retroactive to June 7. Catcher Paul Bako was recalled to take his roster spot and Ryan Madson is expected to assume the closer role.
