| Torii Hunter will remain in right field |

(5/13/13) Tigers manager Jim Leyland said right fielder Torii Hunter will not be used in center field with Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list, according to the Detroit Free Press. Hunter, who has played 1,523 games in center field, was a Gold Glove center fielder from 2001-09.
Hunter, who has been heavily used in right field since 2010, is batting .256 (11 for 43) with two doubles and six RBI in nine May games. He hit .370 in 23 April games.

(5/4/13) Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter went 4 for 5 with two RBI and three runs scored Saturday against the Astros. Hunter also walked once and stole a base in the 17-2 win.
The 37-year-old singled in his first two at-bats then had an RBI hit in the seventh inning. He added an RBI double in the eighth to improve his average to .361.
Hunter has hit safely in eight of nine games and is batting .350 (14 for 40) with seven RBI and eight runs scored during that stretch.

(4/29/13) Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday he planned to give outfielder Torii Hunter the day off Monday against the Twins, per MLB.com. Hunter has started 21 games and appeared in 22 of the Tigers' 23 games.
Hunter is batting .375, which included 13 multi-hit games. He also has a .417 on-base percentage, .500 slugging percentage and .917 OPS.

(4/27/13) Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter hit safely for the 18th time in 21 games on Saturday against the Braves. He went 1 for 4 in a 7-4 win.
Before the contest, manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com that he will watch the workload of the 37-year-old early in the year.
Hunter is batting .380 with one homer and 11 RBI.
"I have to watch him," Leyland said, "but he's really doing well. And we did have back-to-back days off [with the rainout Tuesday], so that helps. But I have to watch him. It's not easy in the cold weather for anybody, let alone one of our elder statesmen. I have to watch him and not get greedy."

(4/25/13) Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter produced his 12th multi-hit game of the season Thursday against the Royals. Hunter's 2-for-4 performance also ended a 1-for-12 drought for the veteran outfielder.
Hunter is batting .373 (31 for 83) through 19 games. He also added his 10th RBI Thursday.

| Just when Torii Hunter seemed to find his niche in Los Angeles, batting between Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in a loaded Angels lineup, he left for Detroit this offseason, where he'll likely have the good fortune of batting in front of Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. OK, so maybe he doesn't lose so much with the move. At age 37, he seems to need the lineup support. Prior to earning that coveted second spot in the Angels lineup on June 8, he hit .238 in 40 games. From that point forward, though, he hit .340 in 100 games, giving him a season batting average over .300 for the first time in his career. Because he's no longer the power or speed threat he once was, Hunter will have to perform at a similar clip in 2013 to remain an advisable option in standard mixed leagues. It seems far-fetched given his track record and the fact he struck out nearly 100 times more than he walked last year, but with Cabrera and Fielder batting behind him, you never know. If nothing else, you can count on Hunter to play every day, so even if he doesn't excite you in mixed leagues anymore, he won't go for especially cheap in AL-only formats. (Updated 12/3/12) |
