J. Walker released by Orioles
(6/5/09) The Orioles released veteran left-hander Jamie Walker, ending a mostly disappointing three-year stay with the team. Walker had a 5.11 earned run average in 12 1/3 innings and was coming off a horrible appearance in Seattle on Tuesday. He gave up two home runs in one inning and was charged with a blown save in the Orioles' 8-2 loss to the Mariners. Manager Dave Trembley notified Walker of the decision early Friday. "It's something that had been discussed the last few days," Trembley said. "Obviously his last appearance in Seattle was the one that finalized it. Everybody knows what the numbers are. We just felt we had to try and get somebody that would be more effective. It just wasn't getting done." Left-hander Alberto Castillo was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to take Walker's spot in the Orioles' bullpen. Castillo, 33, was 1-0 with two saves and a 3.09 ERA in 24 games in the minors this year.
Walker struggling against lefties
(6/1/09) From The Sports Xchange: LHP Jamie Walker is struggling against left-handed hitters and he told MASNsports.com he hopes a simple adjustment with his hands from the set position will help. Lefties are hitting .429 against the Orioles' left-handed specialist.
Walker fined for lashing an ump
(4/30/09) Orioles pitcher Jamie Walker was fined by the commissioner's office Thursday for criticizing umpire Angel Hernandez. Hernandez called a balk on Walker during the seventh inning of Tuesday night's 7-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards when the left-hander appeared to pick off Maicer Izturis. Three batters later, Kendry Morales hit a two-run double for a 7-4 lead. "It's a (terrible) call," Walker said. "I don't know if the guy's got something against me or what, but no way did I balk. It changed the whole game. ... It's unacceptable at this level." Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for discipline, imposed the fine. "Mr. Walker's comments were an inappropriate, unnecessary attack on umpire Hernandez's professionalism," Watson said. "Such comments impugning the integrity and impartiality of Angel Hernandez or any other member of the umpiring staff will not be tolerated."
Walker strong, works on screwball
(3/21/09) From the The Sports Xchange: LHP Jamie Walker is working on a screwball with former Orioles pitcher Mike Cuellar, according to MASNsports.com. Walker, who missed much of September because of elbow discomfort, said he is feeling strong this spring.
Walker beyond efficient vs. Rangers
(8/9/08) The Sports Xchange notes that Jamie Walker was beyond efficient Friday against Texas. As the first reliever after starter Jeremy Guthrie departed, Walker needed just six pitches to get through the eighth inning.
