Rival teams looking to struggling Brewers for possible deals

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/22/15) With the Brewers looking more and more like eventual sellers, rival teams are saying pitchers Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse have limited trade value, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Early on, teams seem to be preferring Lohse due to his pending free agency at the end of the season, and his excellent clubhouse presence. Both pitchers have struggled this season, each with an ERA over 5.00 in nine starts.

Heyman also notes that teams are unsure if the Brewers would consider trading young shortstop Jean Segura, who is currently on the disabled list with a broken finger. There seems to also be uncertainty whether catcher Jonathan Lucroy or outfielder Carlos Gomez would be available, though Gomez would probably be the most likely to go since his contract is up after the 2016 season.

Brewers' Matt Garza allows four runs in loss vs. Braves

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/21/15) Brewers pitcher Matt Garza took the loss on Thursday, giving up four earned runs on five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 10-1 defeat against the Braves.

Garza (2-6) entered the seventh inning with the game tied 1-1, but the Braves were able to break the tie with an RBI single that pushed the starter out of the game. The bullpen would allow the two runners he left on base, as well as four more Atlanta runs, to score in the inning, turning a close game into a blowout.

Garza owns a 5.71 ERA and 38:24 K:BB ratio in 52 innings. He's slated to face the Giants at home on Tuesday.

Brewers SP Matt Garza gives up 10 earned runs on Saturday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/16/15) Brewers starter Matt Garza got knocked around by the Mets in Saturday's loss. Garza, who came into Saturday's game with four straight quality starts, gave up a whopping 10 earned runs (a career-high) on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.

He gave up a run in the bottom of the second and then the wheels completely fell off as he allowed nine runs in a 10-run fourth inning, including a grand slam to Wilmer Flores. The nightmare outing increased Garza's ERA to 5.72. Garza (3-5) threw 68 pitches, with 44 going for strikes.

"It's on me," said Garza, per MLB.com. "My job is to go deep; I didn't. I didn't get anywhere close to what I wanted to accomplish. You just 'wear it' and move on."

He'll look to get back on track in his next start, scheduled for Thursday in Atlanta.

If Brewers become sellers, pitchers Lohse, Garza could be dealt

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/15/15) In the 10 games since Craig Counsell took over the manager's job for the Brewers on May 4, the team has been playing .500 ball (5-5 record). Nevertheless, the club is still 12 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central and they could become sellers before too long.

If that is the case, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports that pitcher Kyle Lohse, who is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season, is a likely candidate to be dealt. Lohse has struggled so far in 2015, evidenced by his 7.03 ERA in his first seven starts.

Heyman also adds that the team would be interested in moving fellow right-hander Matt Garza, who still has two years left on his current contract.

Brewers starter Matt Garza tosses seven strong innings in no-decision

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(5/10/15) Brewers starter Matt Garza threw seven strong innings on Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and struck out nine for a no-decision against the Cubs.

Garza's only blemish was a solo home run hit off him by catcher Miguel Montero in the sixth inning.

The nine K's is a season high for Garza.

Garza's next start is scheduled for Saturday in New York against the Mets.
