|Matt Garza hit hard in Milwaukee debut |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(3/2/14) Brewers pitcher Matt Garza got the start Sunday, but failed to make it past the opening frame in a 6-5 win over Colorado.
Garza surrendered an RBI single to Carlos Gonzalez, a two-run double to Michael McKenry and an RBI single to Brandon Barnes. Alfredo Figaro relieved him in the second inning. It was Garza's first game action since signing a four-year deal with Milwaukee in late January.

|Manager: Matt Garza personality already helping Brewers |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(2/21/14) Ron Roenicke has claimed that new Brewers starter Matt Garza has already positively affected his team without throwing a pitch in a game. Roenicke has been impressed with his personality.
"He's not a guy that cmes into a new organization and just sits quietly and watches," Roenicke told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "His personality - he's just all over the place. He's vocal; he's laughing. What I like about it is he really works hard. I think that's a great combination to have. You have fun when you need to but when you need to bear down he can bear down."
Garza signed a four-year deal with a team option for a fifth in late January.
|Bad timing led to Matt Garza missing out on Angels' offer |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(2/17/14) Brewers starting pitcher Matt Garza explained Monday it was a case of bad timing as the reason why he didn't jump at the Angels four-year, $52 million offer in December.
"They offered, but it was more of a weird situation," Garza said, per MLB.com. "I was on vacation with my wife and I didn’t want to be disturbed, and it was like, ‘Here it is, we’ll pull it in a certain amount of hours.’ I didn’t have a chance to respond, so I just said, ‘Whatever. It is what it is.'"
|Brewers willing to be flexible with Matt Garza's schedule |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(2/9/14) Given Matt Garza's history with injuries, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said the team is mapping out a plan for the veteran right-hander this spring, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"(Pitching coach) Rick (Kranitz) has already begun to do that, depending on what he needs in spring training to get ready," Roenicke said. "He has enough history to know himself and what he needs to do to get ready for the season. It'll be conversations and what we see, and we'll come up with a plan.
"And also during the year, is this a guy you want to keep on track every fifth day or if he gets an extra day when the schedule allows will that help him? Does it help in the middle of the season to bump him a start? That will be an ongoing thing depending on how he feels and how we can maneuver it."

2014 Draft Prep: 12-team, H2H mock draft
With Fantasy drafts starting to ramp up, Scott White breaks down our latest standard Head-to-Head mock draft.
|Matt Garza's topsy-turvy 2013 makes him one of the more difficult players to assess on Draft Day. At first, he was damaged goods, the start of his season delayed more than six weeks because of a lat strain, which followed a triceps strain that sidelined him for the final 2 1/2 months of 2012. Then, he was a hot commodity, one of the most attractive names on the trade market thanks to a six-start stretch with the Cubs in which he went 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Then, he was a letdown, consistently pitching seven-plus innings for the Rangers but with a 4.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings in 13 starts. So basically, his 2013 was right in line with the rest of his career -- flashes of greatness interspersed with mediocrity. In the end, the numbers are adequate for a middle-of-the-rotation Fantasy option, but the highs and lows will drive you crazy. Landing with the Brewers shouldn't change his value too much. He's been the same in the NL and AL, in hitter's parks and pitcher's parks. For a decent ERA, decent WHIP and decent strikeout rate, you could do worse than him if he lasts beyond Round 15. Just don't expect him to be at his best all year.
