| Jared Burton fills in for save |

(5/12/13) With Glen Perkins unavailable, Twins pitcher Jared Burton collected his first save of the season during Minnesota's 8-5 win over Baltimore on Saturday night. Burton worked a perfect ninth inning and registered a strikeout for his first save since Aug. 4, 2012, at Boston.

| (2/12/13) Twins reliever Jared Burton told MLB.com on Tuesday that he will have no restrictions this season after the club limited him a bit in 2012 as he was coming off shoulder surgery. The right-hander posted a 2.18 ERA in 64 appearances a year ago and converted 5 of 9 save chances.

| In five years with the Reds, Jared Burton was nothing more than a marginal middle reliever. But in his first year with the Twins, he was so good that he nearly ascended to the closer role. He and Glen Perkins actually shared ninth-inning duties for the first month after Matt Capps went down with irritation in his right rotator cuff, but Perkins, who was already signed to a long-term deal, eventually claimed the job outright. Still, with a 2.18 ERA and 0.92 WHIP, Burton gave the Twins no reason to think he couldn't handle the job if need be. Of course, he could always regress back to his Reds numbers, but considering his turnaround coincided with him gaining two miles per hour on his fastball, he seems to be a different pitcher now. If you draft Perkins as one of your closers in an AL-only league, Burton is the pitcher you'll want to handcuff to him. (Updated 1/8/13) |
