A's announce rotation plans for start of second half
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/13/14) The Athletics announced their post-All-Star-break rotation plans Sunday. Jeff Samardzija has drawn the first start of the second half Friday vs. Baltimore.

Jason Hammel will pitch the second game of the Baltimore series and Sonny Gray will finish off the three-game set. Scott Kazmir will then pitch the opener of a series against Houston July 22. He will be followed by Jesse Chavez before the rotation resets.

Jesse Chavez suffers sixth loss in final start before ASG
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/13/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez (7-6) fell one out shy of quality start in a loss to the Mariners in Seattle Saturday night. The right-hander yielded three runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings of a 6-2 defeat.

Chavez has dropped two of his last three starts heading into the break. He owns a 3.14 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP over 19 starts (114 2/3 innings). His next start will come after the All-Star break, though the A's have yet to announce their upcoming pitching plans.
Jesse Chavez probably not a rest-of-season option
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/8/14) Clearly, you're not cutting Jesse Chavez in Fantasy, particularly if you play in a league where his relief pitcher eligibility means something to you, but his nine-strikeout performance Monday against the Giants really brought into focus just how much his stock has fallen over the last couple months. It wouldn't have been a big deal in April, when he recorded more than a strikeout per inning with regularity, but in the eight starts leading up to Monday's, he averaged just 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

And it's not like his walk rate (3.3 per nine) during that stretch was so hot either. He seems to be losing steam after his out-of-nowhere success to begin the season, and while this current version of him is still useful, it may have its limits. Chavez spent most of last season in the bullpen, remember, and as a result, accumulated just 87 1/3 innings between the majors and minors. He's at 109 innings now.

True, he's had other seasons when he started enough to eclipse 130 innings, or at least come close, so I'm not saying 150 or 160 is out of his reach. But 180 may be. I'm guessing it's a big reason why the Athletics felt they had to acquire two arms in the Cubs trade even with Tommy Milone pitching well and Drew Pomeranz recovering from injury.

I'm thinking Chavez cedes his rotation spot to one of those two before the end of August.

Jesse Chavez strikes out nine in win vs. Giants
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/8/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez earned a win Monday, giving up just four hits and two walks in six scoreless innings and striking out nine in his team's 5-0 victory over the Giants.

Chavez (7-5) turned in back-to-back mediocre outings heading into Monday but brought his A-game against the Giants, matching his best strikeout total of the season while shutting out the opposition for the third time. He owns a 3.06 ERA and 101:34 K:BB ratio in 109 innings going into Saturday's matchup with the Mariners.

Jesse Chavez edges out Brad Mills for last spot in rotation
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/5/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez will stay in the rotation as the fifth starter, edging out Brad Mills, who will move to the bullpen for now, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports Saturday.

The A's acquired starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel via trade on Friday. Chavez will make his next scheduled start on Monday against San Francisco.
