|Jesse Chavez delivers another stellar outing |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(4/20/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez continued his strong start to the season with another dominant outing on Sunday, earning his first win of the season in his team's 4-1 victory over the Astros. The right-hander permitted one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings of work.
Chavez has allowed just one earned run in each of his first four starts. He owns a 1.38 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP with 28:5 K:BB ratio over 26 innings pitched. He will start again against the Astros, this time in Houston on Friday.
|What's different for Jesse Chavez? |
|by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(4/15/14) The way he's pitching would have you believe Jesse Chavez is a highly rated up-and-comer just scratching the surface of his potential. But he's actually a 30-year-old journeyman who has failed to capitalize on repeated opportunities at the big-league level.
Only when Al Melchior observed on a recent edition of Fantasy Baseball Today that Chavez has significantly altered his arsenal from earlier in his career did I open myself to the possibility of him becoming something more.
That was before Chavez's latest start, a nine-strikeout effort against Angels Monday night. Back-to-back starts with nine strikeouts and no walks is notable for any pitcher, regardless of age or track record. The cutter he worked to develop last year seems to have made a difference.
Chavez is still far from a sure thing, but since we really don't know where his new arsenal will take him, this hot start is a wave worth riding. As one who benefited from Esteban Loaiza's newfound cutter in 2003, I'd be a fool to ignore it.
|Jesse Chavez strikes out nine in no-decision Monday |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(4/15/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez didn't factor into the decision Monday after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings while striking out nine in his team's 3-2 win over the Angels.
Chavez pitched very well in the no-decision, throwing 77 of his 100 pitches for strikes. He was on the hook for the loss despite his strong effort before John Jaso hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit.
Chavez has done excellent in his first three starts, posting a 1.35 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 22:2 K:BB ratio in 20 innings. He's still looking for his first win, and he'll try and secure it Sunday at home against the Astros.
|Hard-luck Jesse Chavez hurls gem for Athletics |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(4/9/14) Athletics right-hander Jesse Chavez became the latest victim Wednesday of the inability of closer Jim Johnson to close.
Chavez pitched his second fine game, yielding just one run on six hits in seven innings with no walks and nine strikeouts. But Johnson blew a three-run lead in the ninth and forced his team to win it in extra innings. Chavez has given up just two earned runs in 13 innings this season with 13 strikeouts. He will try again for his first win Monday against the Angels.
|Jesse Chavez takes no-decision for quality start |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(4/4/14) Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez looked solid in his season debut Thursday, though he had to settle for a no-decision in a 3-2 extra-innings win.
Chavez twirled a quality start in just his third career start. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and a pair of walks in six innings of work. He struck out four while throwing 56 of 91 pitches for strikes in the no-decision.
Chavez had made 189 of his 191 appearances in the majors as a reliever prior to Thursday, but injuries have pushed him into service as a starter. His next turn in the rotation is set for Wednesday against the Twins.
