Preseason Outlook

Gamel began the 2009 season as one of the best prospects in the Brewers organization, and he didn't disappoint with the playing time he got, hitting five home runs in 128 major-league at-bats. Unfortunately, Casey McGehee didn't disappoint with the playing time he got either, and now the 27-year-old has apparently leapfrogged the 24-year-old on the organizational ladder. Unless something changes this spring, Gamel will have to begin the season in the minors, working to improve his defense or perhaps learn a new position altogether. He'll get the first call if someone gets injured, though, making him worth a flier in NL-only leagues. His bat, if nothing else, is major-league ready. (Updated 12/18/09)
