Preseason Outlook

Before we jump all over Gomez for his miserable numbers over the last three years, we have to remember he's only 24. He could see the light in the next year or two and end up having a productive major-league career. But boy, does he look lost on the baseball diamond right now. He's all the tools without the polish. He has the size to hit for power but had only three home runs in 315 at-bats last year. He has the speed to lead the league in stolen bases but got caught in one-third of his 21 attempts last year. And as for his ability to make contact, he posted an absurd 6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a first-year starter in 2008 and didn't improve much last year. The Twins decided he was too much of a project for them and shipped him off to Milwaukee, where he'll play every day. Again, those tools make him an interesting sleeper, but you wouldn't want to take a chance on him in mixed leagues. (Updated 1/19/10)
