Astros acquire Carlos Gomez, Mike Fiers from Brewers

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7:37 pm ET) The Astros and the Brewers have struck a deal that would send center fielder Carlos Gomez and starter Mike Fiers to Houston, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports. The Brewers are expected to get several prospects back in the deal, Heyman adds.

Gomez was nearly dealt to the Mets on Wednesday, but the trade fell through after the Mets backed out due to medical concerns. Gomez's addition to the Astros will give Houston a very solid outfield and lineup down the stretch.

Fiers has been solid for the Brewers this year, posting a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts. He will solidify an already deep rotation for the Astros.

The Brewers officially announced the deal, and they will receive outfielders Domingo Santana and Brett Phillips, along with pitchers Josh Hader and Adrian Houser.

Report: Mets' concerns over Carlos Gomez's medicals nixes trade

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(12:22 am ET) The Mets have reportedly backed out of a deal that would have sent Carlos Gomez to the New York from the Brewers.

Sources tell FoxSports.com that the Mets had concerns over Gomez's medical records, and decided not to follow through on the proposed deal, which would have sent Wilmer Flores and Zack Wheeler to Milwaukee.

Gomez spent time on the disabled list earlier this season with a hip injury, but he has played all but one game since June 23. However, it seems the Mets' staff did not like what they saw in the medical report.

There had been thought that the Brewers saw something in Wheeler's medical charts, as he had Tommy John surgery in March. But reports are saying it's Gomez's injury history that has nixed the deal.

Mets to acquire CF Carlos Gomez from Brewers

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/29/15) The Mets and Brewers have agreed on a deal that would send center fielder Carlos Gomez to New York, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

In exchange, the Mets would send right-hander Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores to the Brewers, according to the New York Post

Gomez was originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent back in 2002. He played in 58 games with the Mets in 2007. He hit .232 that year.

In 2008, he was sent to Minnesota in the deal that sent Johan Santana to Queens. He was later traded to Milwaukee in a deal in 2009, and he has been there ever since.

He was an All-Star in 2013 and 2014 and won a Gold Glove in '13. This year, he is batting .266 with eight home runs for the Brewers.

Gomez is currently signed through the 2016 season.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has since denied reports of a trade, saying "there is no trade...it will not transpire," Heyman reports.

Mets, Brewers discussing possible deal involving Carlos Gomez

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/29/15) The Mets are currently involved in talks with the Brewers regarding center fielder Carlos Gomez, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirms. Gomez, who was originally drafted and traded by the Mets, would represent an offensive upgrade in center field over the incumbent Juan Lagares.

It is not presently known how serious or far along the talks are, and neither team has commented at this point.

Counsell upset with Brewers OF Carlos Gomez for steal attempt

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7/28/15) Craig Counsell has reacted angrily to a caught stealing by Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez in the ninth inning of their Monday night loss in San Francisco.

Gomez singled to open the inning with his team two runs behind. He attempted a steal with the tying run at the plate and was thrown out. He was 1-for-4 in the game.

"You cannot get thrown out there," Counsell told MLB.com.

Scooter Gennett later hit a double that would have either scored Gomez or put two runners in scoring position. But the Brewers did not score.
