Preseason Outlook

Lowrie just can't buy a break. He won the everyday shortstop job with a monster spring training, but less than two weeks into the season, his left wrist -- the same one he fractured in 2008 -- began to bother him, prompting a DL stint and, eventually, surgery. He returned in July and played about two weeks before developing nerve irritation in his left arm -- a byproduct of the wrist surgery. In the end, Lowrie produced the same feeble numbers he did down the stretch in 2008, but you almost have to discount the season entirely because of injury. Unfortunately, the Red Sox don't have that luxury and signed Marco Scutaro to start over Lowrie this season. The soon-to-be 26-year-old still has potential as a middle infielder with a patient approach and plus power, but in his current role, he should go undrafted in mixed leagues. (Updated 1/5/10)
