Lowrie streaking with power for 'Stros: Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie continued his recent hot hitting ways in Monday's series opener against the Cubs. He went 3 for 4 with a home run to extend his modest hitting streak to six games. He also scored twice and stole a base in the 8-4 win. Fantasy Analysis
Lowrie has gone 8 for 22 (.364) with three homers and six RBI during his hitting streak and has raised his slugging percentage from .427 to .492 over that span. He has been a little streaky in his first season with the Astros but with seven homers and 18 RBI thus far, he is beginning to make some noise in Fantasy. The 28-year-old is on pace for a career campaign, as long as he can stay healthy, so keep an eye on his progress and continue to view Lowrie as a viable option in deeper mixed leagues. Joe Blanton pitched seven-plus strong innings and Placido Polanco homered for his 2,000th career hit to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night.
Jed Lowrie got off to a solid start in 2011 and even became a regular for the Red Sox at one point. He batted .361 with a .583 slugging percentage through his first 22 games and hit three home runs with 12 RBI during that stretch. His hitting would slow down after that and a shoulder injury in June landed him on the DL for an extended period of time. He returned in August but hit just .221 over his final 33 games to finish the year with a .252 average. Lowrie was traded to the Astros in the offseason and will likely start at either shortstop or third base. He had the potential to hit 20 homers with a full season of at-bats and has shown in the past that he can keep his average respectable. The 27-year-old will not be surrounded by much talent in Houston but since he is expected to see every-day at-bats, consider Lowrie a late-round pick in mixed leagues on Draft Day. (Updated 1/9/12)
