Preseason Outlook

The bad news is Maybin flopped when the Marlins tried to make him their everyday center fielder coming out of spring training, hitting .202 through May 10. The good news is he regrouped in the minors, and when he returned Sept. 1, he looked like a different player, hitting .293 with three home runs over his final 92 at-bats. He hasn't progressed as quickly as some scouts had hoped, no longer appearing on the verge of a 20-20 season, but he has made progress with his plate discipline over the last couple years. Plus, he'll have just barely turned 23 by opening day. His big breakout won't come for two or three more years. The Marlins will continue to take a cautious approach with him, but he looks like the starter in center to begin the year. He has sleeper appeal, but he'll probably go undrafted in mixed leagues unless he has a hot spring. (Updated 1/19/10)
