Preseason Outlook

From utility infielder to power-hitting outfielder to All-Star second baseman, Zobrist rose to Fantasy prominence before the average baseball fan had a chance to learn his name. It started with just some spotty at-bats in place of Gabe Gross, Jason Bartlett and Akinori Iwamura, evolved into a full-time role when Iwamura hurt his knee, and he never let up from there. Zobrist hit so well -- his .948 OPS ranking tops at his position, ahead of even Chase Utley -- the Rays had to trade Iwamura in the offseason just so Zobrist wouldn't have to split at-bats with anyone. Granted, he hit almost two-thirds of his home runs in the first half, before opposing pitchers took him seriously, but he posted the same high walk rate and an even better batting average in the second half. And let's not underestimate those 17 stolen bases. Zobrist might not hit 30 homers, but he'll come close and rank right up there with the elite second basemen just on peripherals. Let the skeptics worry. Take Zobrist three or four rounds after they take Ian Kinsler. (Updated 12/22/09)
