Mets eyeing Athletics 2B/OF Ben Zobrist, who might be off table
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(7/3/15) The Mets have interest in Athletics second baseman/outfielder Ben Zobrist, but a recent Oakland surge might prevent them from trading him, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman has reported.
Zobrist could be a boon to a Mets offense that ranks second-last in the National League in runs scored and managed to plate just one in a just-completed three-game series against the Cubs. He can also play multiple positions, including third base, where David Wright (back) appears likely to remain absent for quite some time.
The Mets are not alone in their interest in Zobrist. Several other teams have inquired about him.

Report: Mets, A's have discussed Ben Zobrist in trade talks
|by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer|
|(6/24/15) Strapped for offense, the Mets have had some preliminary trade discussions with the Athletics involving utility man Ben Zobrist, sources say. Zobrist, a free agent after the season, is a switch-hitter that can play all over the diamond, which makes him a very attractive target no doubt.
It is not known whether the Mets plan to make any significant moves before the July 31 trade deadline, but with the team plagued by injuries and ineffectiveness with many of their key offensive players, a trade to bolster the team is not outside the realm of possibilities.
"It would be nice to do something if we could to improve the team and give it a psychological boost,'' general manager Sandy Alderson said, per the New York Daily News.
Zobrist spent about a month of the season on the disabled list with a knee injury, but is hitting .256 with four home runs in 26 game since returning. Throught his career, Zobrist has played at every position besides pitcher and catcher.
|2014 summary: Even as Ben Zobrist entered into his age-33 season, he showed no signs of slowing down as an on-base threat. With a .354 on-base percentage, Zobrist exceeded a .345 mark for the sixth season in a row, and that translated into his sixth straight year with more than 75 runs scored. With 83 runs, Zobrist actually increased his production in that category, but his RBI total fell from 71 to 52. Zobrist's .225 batting average with runners in scoring position played a role in that, but so did the overall decline in the Rays' offense. Two areas in which Zobrist appears to be steeped in decline are extra-base power (10 home runs, 34 doubles) and stolen bases (10 steals in 15 attempts).|
Playing time status: Zobrist had his first visit to the disabled list in six seasons, but a dislocated thumb kept him out for only two weeks. He remains a durable player and a reliable source of plate appearances, and his versatility should keep him in the Athletics' lineup on a daily basis in his first year in Oakland.
2015 outlook: Though Zobrist still offers solid run production for a middle infielder, his pedestrian home run and stolen base totals kept him outside the top 10 among second basemen and shortstops in Rotisserie value. He could resurrect his RBI total with better hitting with runners in scoring position, but his power and speed could continue to wane. At minimum, Zobrist should be in the top 10 at both middle infield positions in points leagues, and his eligibility at three positions (he is also outfield-eligible) helps to make him a solid middle round option in all standard mixed league formats.
