Preseason Outlook

Thomas' numbers might not impress you, but he has some value in Fantasy, especially since he stands to get everyday at-bats if either one of Austin Jackson and Wilkin Ramirez needs more seasoning. He got everyday at-bats for a spell last year, but for some reason, the Tigers didn't turn him loose on the base paths, keeping him from meeting his full potential. He walks reasonably well, making up for his so-so batting average. With regular playing time, he'd be a poor man's Nate McLouth -- one who tops out at 12-15 homers rather than 20-25. Of course, the Tigers have more talented players -- such as Jackson and Ramirez -- waiting in the wings, but if Thomas plays well enough to keep the job, he could be quite a find in AL-only leagues. His relatively low ceiling makes him not worth your time in mixed leagues, though. (Updated 1/20/10)
