(7/7/14) The Red Sox optioned shortstop Jonathan Herrera to Triple-A Pawtucket to clear a roster spot for first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp, reports WEEI.com. Herrera batted .233 with no homers and nine RBI in 90 at-bats.
|Jonathan Herrera proves to be adequate fill-in |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(6/1/14) Red Sox infielder Jonathan Herrera filled in capably for Dustin Pedroia Saturday, in what is likely to be just a one-time thing.
Herrera started with Pedroia out with an injury, though Pedroia is expected back in the lineup by Sunday. He was 3 for 4 out of the No. 9 spot, scoring two runs and driving in one more in a 7-1 win over the Rays.
Herrera has appeared in 26 games for the Red Sox, largely as a reserve. He is hitting .222/.314/.222 in 45 at-bats.
|Jonathan Herrera gets the nod at third |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(4/7/14) Red Sox infielder Jonathan Herrera will start at third base Monday.
The club signed Ryan Roberts to potentially fill in while Will Middlebrooks is out, but Herrera will get the first crack at the starting role. Roberts is expected to be active for Monday's game.
|Jonathan Herrera avoids arbitration |

(1/17/14) Red Sox infielder Jonathan Herrera has avoided arbitration with the club.
Herrera is set to make $1.3 million next season. He's coming off a season in which he hit .292/.336/.364 in 195 at-bats.
|Rockies and Red Sox engage in three-player swap |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(12/18/13) The Rockies traded infielder Jonathan Herrera to the Red Sox in exchange for reliever Franklin Morales and minor league reliever Christopher Martin, according to MLB.com.
Herrera hit .292 in 81 games for the Rockies in 2013, playing mostly in a utility role.
Morales made 19 relief appearances and one start for the Red Sox, and he recorded a 2-2 record and a 4.62 ERA. Martin went 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA and two saves at Triple-A Pawtucket.
|Jonathan Herrera was acquired by the Red Sox in a December trade for Franklin Morales. The 29-year-old played significant time at shortstop and second base last season, while making five appearances at third base and two in the outfield. Assuming the Red Sox don't sign a shortstop, Herrera will likely serve as Xander Bogaerts insurance. If the top prospect doesn't pan out -- or requires a stint in the minors, or is shifted to third base in case something happens to Will Middlebrooks -- Herrera will see some at-bats, and benefit from the increase in playing time in the string lineup. This is AL-only territory; and deep Al-only territory at that. But as long as Herrera enters 2014 as the backup infielder for Boston, he's worth a reserve pick in deeper AL-only formats.
