Rays outfielder Sam Fuld is going under the knife. The Rays announced Monday Fuld needs surgery on his right wrist and he's expected to be sidelined four to five months -- meaning his entire 2012 season is in jeopardy. The wrist injury had previously been characterized as a sprain, but a recent MRI revealed there was an issue with the tendon sheath.
03/25/2012 13:21 Upton still hurting, leaving opening day as a question
Eleven days after his scary outfield collision with teammate Desmond Jennings, B.J. Upton still hasn't been able to return to the Rays lineup. While he remains optimistic about opening day, manager Joe Maddon said he's in danger of running out of time.
Sam Fuld got off to a hot start last season and became a well-known name in Fantasy thanks to his solid April. He batted .289 with one homer, eight RBI and 10 stolen bases over the first month of the season and posted a surprising .433 slugging percentage. But the 30-year-old was unable to maintain his consistency on and offense, and became more of a defensive replacement as the year went on. Fuld ended up hitting .240 with three home runs, 27 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He enters 2012 as a reserve outfielder in Tampa Bay and will likely not produce enough on an everyday basis to matter in Fantasy. Leave Fuld for the deepest of AL-only formats on Draft Day.
