Brewers' Ron Roenicke: Ryan Braun's thumb not a concenr
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(3/31/15) Brewers manager Ron Roenicke reiterated that outfielder Ryan Braun's thumb is no longer a concern. He told reporters that all systems are go with Braun heading into the start of the season, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Braun is hitting .323 with two homers and six RBI this spring.
Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun's thumb getting healthier
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/23/15) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is starting to get into the swing of things, literally. Braun has hit home runs in two consecutive games and displaying power to the opposite field, a sign his right thumb is getting healthier, reports MLB.com.
"It's showing that he's able to pull his hands inside and still attack the ball," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "I think it's real good to see that."
Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun extends hitting streak Sunday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/22/15) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hit a home run in his second consecutive game Sunday, helping Milwaukee to a 13-4 win over the White Sox. Braun now has a hit in three straight games and catcher Jonathan Lucroy is seeing Braun start to make the turn for Opening Day, reports MLB.com.
"I've been watching his [batting practice] every day and his ball is looking like it was in 2012," Lucroy said. "It's just jumping. The ball is flying off his bat. That's good. That means he's got some strength in there."
Brewers' Ryan Braun hits first homer of spring
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/20/15) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hit his first home run of the spring on Friday.
A day after Braun snapped a string of 13 hitless at bats to start the spring, he hit a solo shot in the fifth inning.
"I think the biggest challenge is just rhythm and timing early," Braun said, per MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. "The more at-bats I get, the better my timing is getting, the more comfortable I feel. I'm headed in the right direction."
|2014 summary: Coming off a 65-game suspension for his part in a PED scandal that not only invalidated his successful appeal of an earlier suspension but also called into question every last achievement of his otherwise spotless career, Ryan Braun couldn't have been more motivated to succeed in 2014. But instead of proving his doubters wrong, he only gave them more ammunition with career-worst numbers that are even worse than they appear when you account for his hot start. From June 1 on -- or the final two-thirds of the season -- he hit .245 with 11 home runs and a .716 OPS.|
Playing time status: So then how do you explain the hot start? That's the wrinkle in an otherwise smooth narrative. While some of the more vindictive types will attribute Braun's poor numbers to him being "off the juice," that explanation conveniently ignores the fact that his right thumb was severely messed up -- an injury that dated back to the previous Brewers season. He rested it for two weeks early in 2014, which allowed him to keep bashing through May, but he played more or less straight through after that.
2015 outlook: After having surgery to repair his thumb in the offseason, the concerns for Braun are twofold: Will the procedure, which is untested in the baseball realm, solve the problem, and if it does, will he get back to being the Braun we knew before all the PED talk started? He won't get as much benefit of the doubt on Draft Day this year, but given his immense upside, he's still worth selecting among the top 15 outfielders.
