Injury Report
Arm - Probable for start of spring training (Updated - 1/5/12)
Fantasy Analysis
Richard's 2011 season ended in August because of shoulder surgery, but he is on track to participate in spring training. Richard went 14-9 in 2010, but he dropped to 5-9 in 2011. His numbers were pretty much the same year-to-year. It's just that San Diego struggled as a team last year, which resulted in the drop in wins. Richard will once again be in the rotation in 2012 for San Diego, but with a high WHIP and low-strikeout potential, Richard is only worth drafting in deep Fantasy formats. (Updated 01/23/2012).
02/09/2012 05:09 2012 Fantasy outlooks: San Diego Padres
As San Diego goes through the rebuilding process, the Padres turn more and more of their attention to the team's youngsters. Michael Hurcomb breaks down the Padres in his Fantasy team outlook.
After a breakthrough 2010 season, Clayton Richard took a step backward last year. In 18 starts, he went 5-9 with a 3.88 ERA, and far more concerning, he struck out only 53 batters in 99 2/3 innings. Richard was shut down in July after undergoing shoulder surgery, and reduced velocity in his 2011 starts indicates that his shoulder may have been bothering him for much of the year. Richard is expected to be ready for spring training, and with the absence of Mat Latos, who was dealt to the Reds, the former University of Michigan quarterback may start the year as the Padres' No. 2 starter behind Tim Stauffer. If Richard can return to his prior form, he could become relevant in mixed leagues, but he is too risky to be drafted in standard mixed league formats. Draft him in your NL-only leagues, but monitor his progress in mixed leagues, as he could pay dividends as a waiver wire pickup. (Updated 1/26/12)
