| Ryan Dempster gets rocked again |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster continued to struggle as he endured his shortest outing of the season and took the loss Thursday night against the Indians.
Dempster (2-5) surrendered a run-scoring double to Drew Stubbs in the second. He then gave up a two-run single to Mark Reynolds and allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice in the fourth. The right-hander was charged with four runs and five hits over three innings. He struck out four and walked four on 85 pitches.
Dempster is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in his last four starts after starting the season 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA. He is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday at home against the Phillies. He has allowed 14 runs -- 12 earned -- in his last 15 innings at Fenway Park.

| Ryan Dempster changes routine |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/22/13) Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster changed his usual pre-start routine after throwing 127 pitches in his last outing, the Boston Globe reports.
Dempster flew to Boston to get a full night of sleep in advance of his start Thursday against the Indians. He skipped his normal bullpen session Tuesday and made throws from flat ground.
"Talking with him as far as how his arm felt coming out of his last start, he didn't feel like there was any changes or lingering effect from the pitches he did throw," Sox manager John Farrell said.

| Ryan Dempster throws 127 pitches in 4 2/3 innings |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (5/18/13) Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster threw 127 pitches Saturday against the Twins but couldn't finish the fifth inning, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits and six walks in 4 2/3 while striking out two.
Dempster's pitch count was his highest since September 2011 when he walked six batters in a start against the Reds. He's scheduled to face the Indians Thursday.

| Ryan Dempster drops second straight start |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster allowed three homers and six runs in five innings during Sunday's 12-4 loss to the Blue Jays. Dempster (2-4) allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six.
Jose Bautista led off the second inning with the first homer. Emilio Bonifacio hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Edwin Encarnacion added a solo shot in the fifth.
Dempster heads into his next start Saturday at Minnesota with a two-game losing streak. The streak started Tuesday against the Twins after he allowed two earned runs in seven innings of a 6-1 loss.

| Ryan Dempster gets no run support |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/7/13) Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster completed seven innings on Tuesday at home against the Twins. Unfortunately, Scott Diamond was much sharper and blanked Boston over a stellar effort.
Dempster threw 110 pitches as he allowed four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. His one walk was a season low. The loss dropped him under .500 at 2-3.
Dempster, who has a 2.93 ERA, had won his previous two outings and now has 55 Ks over 43 innings, as he's in the top five in the American League in Ks. Dempster will look to get back on the winning track when he next takes the ball Sunday against Toronto.

| Ryan Dempster was well on his way to a career year in 2012 with the Cubs -- 2.25 ERA and 1.04 WHIP through 16 starts -- before being sent to the Rangers in a deadline deal. Dempster went on to post an ugly 5.09 ERA with his new team, but did strike out a batter per inning. Although it's easy to point to the league change as a reason for Dempster's rise in numbers -- and that is significant after his signing with the Red Sox -- it should be noted that he went on the DL in mid-June with a lat strain and produced just a 4.50 ERA from that point forward. So it could have been a result of him still being bothered by the injury. Dempster will be 36 this season, and while he hasn't been the most consistent pitcher over his career, he has put together five nice seasons in a row, with a 3.74 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in that span. A move to Fenway for any other pitcher may be scary, but Dempster's last two stops (Texas and Chicago) were in hitter-friendly parks, as well. Dempster's not quite top-level, but he has been good enough as of late to be taken in the later rounds of most drafts. (Updated 1/2/13) |
