Report: Mariners, Austin Jackson agree to $7.7-million deal

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Mariners have avoided arbitration with outfielder Austin Jackson by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $7.7 million, the Seattle Times reports.

The team was able to avoid arbitration with five players in all Friday by agreeing to the terms of one-year contracts for each player. First basman Logan Morrison is scheduled to make $2.725 million with incentives for reaching 500 and 600 plate appearances. Outfielder Dustin Ackley will take in $2.6 million as well as another $50,000 bonus for reaching 500 plate appearances.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano, who was acquired from the Cubs earlier this offseason, will make $2.5 million and can earn another $20,000 if he reaches 375 plate appearances. Pitcher Charlie Furbush will earn $1.3 million.

Mariners avoid arbitration with five players

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Mariners reached agreements with five players Friday, avoiding arbitration with reliever Charlie Furbush, first baseman Logan Morrison and outfielders Dustin Ackley, Austin Jackson and Justin Ruggiano, according to The New Tribune.

Mariners tender six arbitration-eligible players before deadline

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/2/14) The Mariners tendered contracts to six arbitration-eligible players prior to Tuesday's deadline, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Those players include: first baseman Logan Morrison, outfielders Dustin Ackley, Austin Jackson and Michael Saunders, and relievers Charlie Furbush and Tom Wilhelmsen.

Mariners' McClendon has confidence Jackson will bounce back in 2015

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/2/14) Mariners outfielder Austin Jackson didn't quite make the impact Seattle was looking for following his acquisition from Detroit at the trade deadline in July. Jackson had just a .229/.260/.527 slash line in 54 games, which was a far cry from his production in about 4 1/2 seasons with Detroit (.277/.413/.755).

Despite his struggles, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon has confidence Jackson can get back on track. McClendon was the Tigers' hitting coach in Jackson's first four seasons before taking over as the Mariners manager last season.

"From what I saw with Austin -- and I probably know Austin better than anybody -- I think he's going to be just fine," McClendon said, per MLB.com. "We didn't see the best of Austin Jackson, for a number of different reasons.

"One, he was a little beaten down physically. He needs to get himself stronger this offseason. He has to find a way to keep the weight on. And there's some things from a mechanical standpoint we need to shore up. But this guy is a good player. He's an above-average center fielder defensively and an above-average offensive player when he's going like he can go."

Austin Jackson uses his wheels to keep M's alive

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/28/14) It may not have been pretty, but Mariners outfielder Austin Jackson used his wheels to lead his team past the Angels in extras on Saturday.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Jackson grounded out to second and was able to beat out a relay throw to first base for the double play. Brad Miller scored to give the Mariners a 2-1 victory in 11 innings. Jackson went 0 for 5 with a walk and an RBI, lowering his batting average to .255 on the year. With the win, the Mariners stay alive and remain one game back of the A's heading into the final day of the regular season.
