Anyone who thought the Pirates rushed McCutchen to the majors when they promoted the 22-year-old following the Nate McLouth trade in June sang a different tune once he got a few at-bats under his belt. He looked polished, if a little tentative, from the get-go and then exploded in August, hitting .304 with eight home runs and six stolen bases. He already walks like a leadoff hitter and doesn't strike out as much as you'd expect for a player his age. The jury's still out on his power potential -- considering the Pirates bat him leadoff, they don't count on him for much -- but a 20-homer season appears likely in his future. And 30 steals seems a near certainty after he stole 22 bases in only four months last year. Long considered the Pirates' top prospect, McCutchen appears to have a better grasp on the game than other second-year players with similar pedigrees, making him already a safe pick in the middle rounds. And if he meets his full potential, he could be one of the draft's biggest bargains. (Updated 1/18/10)
