Casilla takes on utility role: Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said second baseman Alexi Casilla will serve as the team's utility player after the shuffle that brought shortstop Brian Dozier up from Triple-A Rochester and moved Jamey Carroll to second base. Casilla has earned just one start in the past eight games. (Updated 05/15/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Casilla began the season as the Twins' starting second baseman, but has struggled to hit for average and is carrying just a .247 mark. He also has just four RBI and will now be on the bench in favor of Carroll. "Maybe what I'm doing is not enough, so I've got to work harder to get back to the lineup," he said. "And I'll be available whenever they need me." Consider Casilla a low-end option in deeper AL-only Fantasy formats. (Updated 05/15/2012).

Alexi Casilla's 2011 numbers may not look like the stuff of Fantasy legends, but before you dismiss him as a relevant option in your league, keep in mind that he was in the middle of what was shaping up to be a lengthy midseason hot streak before he went down with a hamstring injury in August, hitting .293 with 12 steals and a .777 OPS over his final 222 at-bats. Those numbers wouldn't make him a shoo-in for the All-Star game or anything, but they would rate him fairly high among the middle infielders in baseball, especially when you factor in the steals. Project those 222 at-bats over 556 at-bats, and you're basically looking at another Erick Aybar, who was considered a major find off the waiver wire last year. Casilla should go undrafted in the majority of Fantasy leagues given his limited ceiling and injury history, but he might actually be something a value pick in deeper leagues. (Updated 1/25/12)
