Preseason Outlook

At first glance, Gonzalez's 2009 numbers don't appear particularly special, but when you consider he hit .236 with two home runs over his first 106 at-bats, you get a better idea why he might turn out to be the biggest prize of the Matt Holliday deal. Making up for his miserable performance in Oakland one year earlier, Gonzalez showed how scouts see things other people don't, exploding to hit .314 with 11 home runs over his final 172 at-bats. By playoff time, he had become a fixture in the lineup, something that should continue going into 2010 even as the Rockies try to fit four outfielders into three spots. The biggest concern with Gonzalez is that his left-handed swing will force him into a platoon role, but his performance against lefties last year suggests it shouldn't. And if he continues his upward rise, it won't. Gonzalez still comes with some risk because of his strikeouts, but among all the outfielders you could draft in the late rounds, he seems the most likely to pay big dividends. (Updated 1/19/10)
