(8/27/12) The Padres reinstated reliever Dale Thayer from the paternity list the team announced prior to Monday's series opener against the Braves. Thayer left the team last Friday for the birth of his child.

| Of the many closer changes that happened in baseball over the first two months last year, the transition to Dale Thayer in San Diego was perhaps the unlikeliest. The 32-year-old entered the year with only 23 career appearances in the big leagues, having spent parts of nine seasons in the minor leagues. Thayer's stint as a closer was short-lived, though. He allowed seven earned runs in his final two appearances in May, and that was pretty much it for him. Of course, the role was never meant to be permanent. Thayer would have lost it about then anyway, with Huston Street returning from the DL. Still, that late hiccup prevented Thayer from reclaiming ninth-inning duties when Street went down with a strained calf in August. Luke Gregerson claimed the role then and fared well enough that he'll clearly be the backup closer in San Diego to begin 2013. As strictly a middle reliever, Thayer doesn't provide enough to factor outside of the deepest of NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/2/13) |
