Thayer taking advantage of opportunity: Padres closer Dale Thayer shut down the Angles on Saturday, striking out two and allowing just a single to Erick Aybar in the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. While Padres manager Bud Black had not officially declared Thayer the closer prior to using him on Saturday, after the game he told the North County Times, "Dale's taking this opportunity and running with it." Fantasy Analysis
That is the best endorsement Thayer has gotten from Black, so well take that as a sign that he considers him the closer for now. And for good reason, as the 31-year-old, who had just 26 innings of major-league experience prior to this season, has pitched nine shutout innings this season, allowing just seven hits with no walks while striking out nine. He has saved each of his five chances, and should be added in deeper mixed leagues at this time. (Updated 05/20/2012).
