Preseason Outlook

Ramirez's inability to stay healthy has been the only thing preventing him from reaching elite status in Fantasy, and it reared its ugly head again in 2009. It had its biggest influence yet, in fact, limiting to only 82 games because of a dislocated left shoulder. He battled some soreness after he returned in July, but he hit just as well after the injury as before it, which should alleviate any long-term concerns you have. Still, if you draft Ramirez, you should know you're drafting a player who has only one 150-game season in the last six. He would probably hit .300 with 30-plus homers and 100-plus RBI in a full season of at-bats, but given his history, you have to expect only a fraction of those numbers, especially since he doesn't figure to get any healthier at age 32. Wait until all the elite third basemen go off the board before using an early- to middle-round pick on him. (Updated 12/18/09)
