| Evan Longoria puts worry behind him |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria admitted Wednesday he was nervous he wouldn't make it through a full season because his legs felt tired at season's outset.
"I felt pretty bad after the first week of the season, like 10 games in. I was kind of scared," Longoria said, per the Tampa Bay Times. "Because in spring training, you probably don't play three-four games in a row at the most toward the end of spring. Once we got like a week, 10 days into the season, I was feeling like, man, my legs were tired. And thoughts started to creep in about how you're going to do it for 162 days."
The Rays made the decision to use Longoria as the DH in an April 10 game against Texas and the slugger said he has felt better ever since. The Rays continue to use Longoria at DH every now and then, and it seems to be the formula to ease the 27-year-old's mind and keep him fresh. Longoria extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
"I haven't felt that fatigue," he said. "I feel like my legs are getting stronger and feeling better as the season goes on. And with that worry behind me, I can be focused on other things."

| Manager raves about Evan Longoria |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/20/13) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games Monday at Toronto. Longoria went 2 for 4 with one run, one double and two RBI.
"It's the best baseball I've seen him play day in and day out, offensively and defensively," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, per MLB.com. "Every thing about his game has been superb, and it's been fun to watch."
Longoria is batting .393 (22 for 56) with three home runs, eight doubles and 14 RBI during his hitting streak. He's now reached base in a major-league best 43 games this season.
"I think the big thing is not chasing," Maddon said. "You talk about that all the time. Once a major-league hitter establishes his own strike zone and forces a pitcher to come to him more than he permits the pitcher to dictate, that's when he becomes really good."

| Evan Longoria honored for big week |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/13/13) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria took home AL player of the week honors Monday after he managed a seven-game hitting streak from April 6-12. Longoria hit .464 (13 for 28) with three home runs, four walks, five doubles, eight runs and 11 RBI in that span.

| Evan Longoria plays hero in victory |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/11/13) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria blasted a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Padres closer Huston Street to lift Tampa Bay to an 8-7 victory Saturday night. The homer was Longoria's only hit of the game and extended his hitting streak to six outings.
During his current hot stretch, he has recorded four doubles and three homers while driving in 11 runs. His batting average stands at .333.
"You need games like this, whether it's myself or anybody coming through in the clutch, to kind of boost morale and jump-start everything," Longoria said.

| Evan Longoria homers, drives in three |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/8/13) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria drove in three of the 10 runs scored by Tampa Bay Wednesday at home against the Blue Jays.
Longoria homered in the bottom of the fourth inning for a two-run shot with two outs. He added a double and an RBI single to finish 3 for 4 with three RBI. He added a walk and is batting .320 for the Rays.
The 27-year-old has gone 6 for 12 (.500) in his last three contests with two doubles, two homers and seven RBI. He has 22 RBI on the year spanning 125 at-bats.

| Evan Longoria's 2012 season was a letdown for the owners who drafted him, simply because he missed more than half the year with a hamstring injury. When he did appear in the Rays' lineup, though, the former American League Rookie of the Year did what he does best, which is to hit for power and get on base. Longoria's 17 home runs in 74 games would have put him on pace for his third 30-plus homer season, had he played close to a full season. The only aspect of his performance that could be a concern was his 14 doubles, which was well below his normal pace. It was actually the second straight year of declining doubles production, but in 2011, Longoria struggled to get hits in general, batting just .244. That low average was the product of hitting more popups and fewer line drives, but he reversed those trends in 2012. Longoria would be a candidate for a major rebound in any event, not only because of the prospect of playing a full year, but also the likelihood of more doubles. Better yet, he is just entering his prime years, so he could easily take a step forward in all regards. A year ago, he was a legitimate first-rounder, and there is certainly no reason to pass on him that early this year. (Updated 1/2/13) |
