Preseason Outlook

Samardzija could begin the season in the starting rotation or the bullpen, but considering his struggles last year, when he posted a 7.53 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP, he might just begin it in the minor leagues. The 25-year-old has good size, stuff and upside, but he's still learning the finer points of pitching in the major leagues. His control, for instance, has to improve before the Cubs can trust him to take the mound every fifth day. With Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Marshall and Carlos Silva also contending for that final rotation spot, Samardzija would really have to turn heads this spring to win it. As a reliever, he might get enough strikeouts to make an impact in NL-only leagues, but you're better off taking a wait-and-see approach than drafting him. (Updated 2/2/10)
