Rockies give Gonzalez, Morneau the night off vs. Dodgers' Kershaw

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/17/15) Rockies manager Walt Weiss gave outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and first baseman Justin Morneau the night off Friday against Dodgers right-hander Clayton Kershaw in Los Angeles. Morneau is 0-for-3 lifetime against Kershaw, while Gonzalez has five hits in 30 at-bats against the Dodgers southpaw.

With Gonzalez on the bench, Weiss chose to go with Charlie Blackmon in right field, Corey Dickerson in left field and Drew Stubbs in center field. Wilin Rosario started at first and batted cleanup in place of Morneau.

Rockies' Stubbs trying to settle into rhythm with limited at-bats

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/14/15) Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs has yet to find his offensive rhythm in 2015. After striking out 25 times in 50 at-bats in spring training, he has struck out three times in four at-bats to begin the regular season.

The Rockies still have plans for Stubbs to be a right-handed-hitting complement to a starting outfield that features all left-handed batters, but he will have to work on his offensive game with just a limited amount of at-bats.

"To stay hot or get hot, you've got to think in that mindset of the things you were doing when you were going well -- that's the only way you get there and stay there," Stubbs said, per MLB.com. "When you have limited opportunity you have to be patient and use batting practice and your pregame routine to get to that spot."

Rockies' Morneau, Blackmon rest Friday against Cubs

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/10/15) Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau and center fielder Charlie Blackmon were not in the starting lineup Friday against the Cubs. Chicago started left-hander Travis Wood.

Drew Stubbs replaced Blackmon in center field, while Wilin Rosario started at first base for Colorado.

Blackmon, who bats left-handed, is batting .143 (2 for 14) with one double and no RBI in three games. He also has one run, one walk and six strikeouts.

Morneau, who also bats left-handed, is batting .077 (1 for 13) with one double and no RBI in three games. He has no walks and one strikeout.

Rockies' Drew Stubbs calls timing root of strikeout issues

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs has struck out eight times in his last three games entering Wednesday and 17 times this spring, but he believes he has discovered the issue at the plate, MLB.com reports.

"Up until a week ago or less than that, I was feeling really good at the plate," Stubbs said. "More recently, I'm going through a battle with my timing. I've been late a lot of times and it's causing me to not see the ball as well, and it's put me in a funk."

Stubbs has decided not to change his mechanics but rather rely on the awareness of the issue to correct the problem.

"The last few days I've had a lot of stuff going through my head, and that's where you can get yourself in trouble," Stubbs said. "You start having a lot of clutter. I'm trying to get to the root of it, which is timing. I was feeling way too good in my batting-practice work and my cage [work] before it started happening, so I know my swing is fine. If all the mechanics are working, it's got to be your timing."

Stubbs is 8 for 33 with two home runs and six walks this spring.

Padres' Drew Stubbs continues to rake in spring training

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/18/15) Padres outfielder Drew Stubbs is lighting up pitchers in spring training. Stubbs hit his second home run of the spring Wednesday, followed by an RBI single against the Padres. Stubbs was trying to work the ball to the opposite field Wednesday, reports MLB.com.

"I hadn't really hit too many balls to right-center or right field," Stubbs said. "Most of my hits had been to the pull side. To get that swing off [field] felt good today."

Stubbs pushed his average to .333 this spring with two home runs and four RBI. Despite adding eight strikeouts, Stubbs has a .381 on-base percentage and .444 slugging.
