Athletics relief pitcher Tyler Clippard tagged for home run in loss
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/12/15) Athletics relief pitcher Tyler Clippard made one mistake in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Mariners, but the mistake cost Oakland the game.
Clippard worked just one inning in relief in the 10th inning and got the first two hitters out on just five pitches. But then, when Nelson Cruz stepped in the box, Clippard left over the plate that Clippard said just "leaked" in the middle, reports MLB.com.
"It was probably a matter of inches as far as execution goes," Clippard said. "But that's what baseball is all about. Not a good enough pitch."
Clippard get stuck with the loss and a 3.00 ERA to begin the season.
"We're fine," Clippard said. "Essentially, the brunt of damage, Cruz did. Couple mistake pitches and some defensive stuff that we got to clean. Other than that, we've been fine."
A's manager making it a priority to get Tyler Clippard a relief outing

|(4/9/15) Athletics manager Bob Melvin said it will be a priority to make sure closer Tyler Clippard pitches in Thursday's game against the Rangers, according to CSN California. Clippard, who has yet to make an appearance this season, said he threw a 10-pitch side session earlier this week in order to stay sharp.
Athletics likely to open season with Tyler Clippard closing
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(2/19/15) The Athletics will likely use Tyler Clippard as the closer to open the year, according to MLB.com.
With Sean Doolittle expected to be sidelined following a shoulder injury, Clippard is in line to take over the ninth inning role. Manager Bob Melvin seemed to agree, though he wouldn't make the announcement official just yet. "We have several guys that have closed," Melvin said. "I'm not going to say right now that [Clippard] is the closer, but he's definitely a guy we're looking to potentially be the guy coming out in the ninth."
While Clippard has mostly been used as a setup man during his career, he did save 32 games with the Nationals back in 2012. He didn't lose his job due to ineffectiveness, and has been solid in any role over his career.
Clippard said he would take on whatever role the team asks. "Whatever role they want me to do, I will do wholeheartedly and embrace," Clippard said.
The 30-year-old posted a 2.18 ERA over 70 1/3 innings last year.
Athletics, Tyler Clippard avoid arbitration
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(2/11/15) The Athletics have avoided arbitration with reliever Tyler Clippard, the team announced.
Clippard is set to make $8.3 million next season, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Clippard submitted an $8.85 million salary, while the Athletics countered with $7.77 million. The 29-year-old Clippard was acquired by the club during the offseason. He posted a 2.18 ERA over 70 1/3 innings last season.
With Sean Doolittle sidelined to begin the season, Clippard could open the year as the team's closer.
|2014 Summary: Tyler Clippard's 2014 season went about like his previous five had gone. One of the game's top setup men since the Nationals first introduced him to the role in 2009, he was again a sure thing in the eighth inning, leading the majors with 40 holds. His 2.18 ERA was his lowest in three years, and his 1.00 WHIP gave him a 0.96 mark over the last four.|
Playing time status: The Nationals passed Clippard over for Drew Storen when they replaced Rafael Soriano as their closer in September, and then this offseason, they dealt him to the Athletics for Yunel Escobar. At least temporarily, Clippard is likely to get a chance to close after all, as he is the leading candidate to replace the injured Sean Doolittle.
2015 Outlook: Because it's not clear how long Doolittle will be out, Clippard has some appeal as a late-round option in standard mixed leagues. Though he is three seasons removed from a 32-save campaign, Clippard still has the skills to be an effective closer as long as he gets to keep the job.
