Preseason Outlook

With a no-hitter already to his credit, Buchholz is ready to be a full-time starting pitcher in the major leagues for the first time. Since making his debut in 2007, he has made 34 career starts (what roughly amounts to a full season) with a 12-14 record, a 4.92 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, striking out 162 in 190 2/3 innings. We have to expect more than that from him this year, especially since he is roughly in the category of a third-year starting pitcher. Pitchers in their third season -- or those having made from 40-70 career starts -- tend to become capable of going 200 innings and improving dramatically, outperforming their draft position. Because he is going to start for a top contender in Boston, barring a trade, and already has a big name in Fantasy circles, Buchholz is going to be picked among the top 50 starting pitchers on Draft Day. It will be presumptuous to assume he performs on that high of a level, but his talent and supporting cast make it a risk worth taking. (Updated 1/11/10)
