Preseason Outlook

Coming on the heels of a poor minor-league season in 2008, Rasmus was underwhelming as a rookie last year. He struck out nearly three times as often as he walked, stole only three bases and posted an OPS (.714) that wouldn't suffice for some utility infielders. Not good for a supposed 20-20 threat who reached base 37 percent of the time in the minors. Normally a slow starter, he actually got worse in the second half, hitting .216 with a .592 OPS. Most likely, Rasmus simply has some learning to do at age 23, but he hasn't offered much reassurance over the past couple years. His talent could make him one of the biggest bargains on Draft Day if he puts it all together at once, but his struggles make him nothing more than a late-round pick. If he doesn't get off to a hot start, he might wind up on the waiver wire in your league. (Updated 1/18/10)
