Rasmus is coming off a very disappointing season in 2011, but the Blue Jays still believe in the 25-year-old outfielder, which is why he got a favorable one-year deal. He hit just .173 in 35 games after coming over in a trade from St. Louis, but Rasmus hit .276 and 23 homers in 2010, so the potential is there. After 2 1/2 years of inconsistent lineup spots, questionable platoon roles and angry dads on message boards, Colby Rasmus finally got out from underneath Tony La Russa's thumb in St. Louis with a midseason trade to Toronto last year. He promptly hit .173 in 133 at-bats with the Blue Jays. His problems are the same as always: He strikes out too much, and he struggles against left-handed pitchers. And then there's the general inconsistency. Each of the last two Aprils, he's made his Fantasy owners think, "This is it. This is when he finally lives up to all the potential he showed in the minors. I'm a drafting genius!" But come June 1, those same owners are scrambling to the waiver to find a replacement for the player whose stats have quickly regressed to the mean. At age 25, Rasmus still has time to live up to that potential he showed in the minors, and the change of scenery should help, especially now that he's had an offseason to recover from the wrist injury that plagued him at the end of last year. But given his slow progression, he'll likely slide to the late rounds in mixed leagues. (Updated 2/1/12)
